Scott Barrett responds to former All Blacks' criticism of 2025 form

All Blacks captain Scott Barrett has come under the microscope of pundits in recent weeks for what they see as an underwhelming season to date.

Barrett’s Crusaders are enjoying a return to competitive form in 2025, but the lock is seen as having a quieter year in comparison with the recent campaigns that contributed to him breaking up the iconic second-row partnership of Sam Whitelock and Brodie Retallick in the All Blacks.

The 31-year-old relinquished his captaincy of the side this season as he manages his new national team responsibilities, leaving successor David Havili as the face of the improved campaign.

Barrett led the Crusaders to several titles when captain, proving to be one of the most relentless defensive talents in the global game while leading his side in a dominant set piece.

The bar has been set incredibly high for the seven-time Super Rugby champion, a fact that was emphasised when a pair of former All Blacks took aim at Barrett’s form in the most recent episode of The Breakdown.

Jeff Wilson made it known Barrett’s form was making him nervous as he looked ahead to the international season, while Justin Marshall proposed shifting Barrett to the blindside flank in an effort to get the 80-Test All Black’s confidence back.

“As much as I love those two gentlemen, none of them have played in the forwards,” Crusaders coach Rob Penney responded in Christchurch this week.

“Scott’s fine. He’ll be determined, he’s a massively influential guy in our environment. We expect him to gradually get any doubters out of the way and kick on on the back end.”

The coach went on to add: “By no means has he been bad. I guess players of his ilk have high expectations every week, but they are human and there’ll be fluctuations.

“As the old saying goes, form comes and goes, but class is permanent, and he’s certainly got class. His form will come back to where we all hope it can be; very quickly, no doubt.”

Barrett himself was posed the question and acknowledged he hasn’t been playing his best rugby in 2025.

“It’s the media’s job to create interest and they’ve got opinions on performances,” he said.

“Possibly those opinions have been not far off the mark. I hold myself to a high standard and potentially some of my performances earlier in the year haven’t been where I’d like them to be.

“I’m not too sure what it is. I don’t want to give too much away. I know the things I’m working on. I’m just getting excited for the Hurricanes this week.”

A suggestion that parting ways with the captaincy had taken an edge out of his game was made, and Barrett didn’t dismiss that notion either.

“I do enjoy leading and possibly having that extra responsibility may have helped my performances in the past. I’ve just got to put my best foot forward each week for this team and get back to playing the best footy I can.

“I probably haven’t had the performances that I would have liked at the start of the season so I’ve been reflecting on that last week.”

He’s not “responding” to anything. He has nothing to prove to Mils etc & would’ve put in this performance regardless. Just getting on with it after a weeks rest.

I have Penney, and it’s quite clear to me that 6 is his most natural position and would give him an opportunity to be in the open a bit more, where he’s best, and maybe get his confidence up first.

If he makes a mistake because it’s an unaccustomed position though, he’d also have to be in the right mindset to deal with all the naysayers.

I remember Steve Hansen once saying something along the lines of how ABs players don’t get the rest and recovery non-Ab super players get, so he wasn’t concerned if ABs players had rubbish form in the early rounds.

Scott will need to stand up come play offs though.

It’s not like he doesn’t know he hasn’t been up to scratch.

Hope he sorts it out.

Yeah that’s the key Yeow, even the best will find it hard to flick the switch and turn it on suddenly. Barrett knows he needs to build into top form like anyone else, it sounds like that time starts now.

Good on Scott Barrett for fronting. He is no frills type of guy. He is going well and I think he will come up with a big game tomorrow. Having guys like Tom Christie and Antonio Shalfoon on the bench brings great strike power. Ethan Blackadder will love being back getting a start.

Is the All Blacks captaincy right for Scott Barrett?

Life can unravel in an instant. For me, that moment came when deceitful cryptocurrency brokers vanished with £40,000 of my savings, a devastating blow that left me paralyzed by shame and despair. The aftermath was a fog of sleepless nights, self-doubt, and a crushing sense of betrayal. I questioned every choice, wondering how I’d fallen for such a scheme. Hope felt like a luxury I no longer deserved. Then, Tech Cyber Force Recovery emerged like a compass in a storm. Skeptical yet desperate, I reached out, half-expecting another dead end. What I found, however, was a team that radiated both expertise and empathy. From our first conversation, they treated my crisis not as a case file, but as a human tragedy. Their professionalism was matched only by their compassion, a rare combination in the often impersonal world of finance.

What happened next defied logic. Within 72 hours of sharing my story, they traced the labyrinth of blockchain transactions, outmaneuvering the scammers with surgical precision. When their email arrived, “Funds recovered, secure and intact,” I wept. It wasn’t just the money; it was the validation that justice could prevail. Tech Cyber Force Recovery didn’t just restore my finances, they resurrected my dignity. But their impact ran deeper. They demystified the recovery process, educating me without judgment. Their transparency became a lifeline, transforming my fear into understanding. Where I saw chaos, they saw patterns; where I felt powerless, they instilled agency. Today, I’m rebuilding not just my savings, but my trust in humanity. Tech Cyber Force Recovery taught me that vulnerability isn’t weakness, and that seeking help is an act of courage. To those still trapped in the aftermath of fraud: miracles exist. They wear no capes, but they wield algorithms and integrity like superheroes. To the extraordinary Tech Cyber Force Recovery team, your work is more than technical prowess. It’s alchemy, turning despair into resilience. You gave me more than my funds; you gave me my future. May your light guide countless others through their darkest nights. From the depths of my heart: Thank you.
