Sharks win away to Bulls with impressive second-half display

Sharks claimed an impressive 29-19 victory away to Bulls in the United Rugby Championship.

A low-key opening half had Sharks 10-7 in front at the break and they kicked on in the second period.

Tries by Jordan Hendrikse, Tino Mavesere and Yaw Penxe earned Sharks an excellent bonus-point victory in Pretoria.

Amazing win from the Sharks. Down to 12 men at one stage. Every scrum and maul seemed to yield a Bulls penalty and the Sharks, attack and offloading still found a way.

Leinster should make the final but Leinster versus fully loaded Sharks would be special.

England, who blew away Wales (who hasn’t) and beat France having a bad day (who hasn’t) at Twickenham, could not get an A over a team that beat Ireland in Dublin and won the whole damn thing.

If we’re dishing out As for most improved - then cool. England gets an A. But France played mesmerizing rugby during this campaign. England were being lambasted half way through their campaign. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Or we may as well announce it now:

England are going to win the World Cup.

If the decision is that there must be at least three backs on the bench look forward to Kwagga starting to play No12. T what point can a forward not swap to being a back and visa versa. It is easy to decide who is front row not so easy to decide who can be loose forward. Rob Louw played No 12 early in his career and then you’ve got a guy like Werner Koch who can easily play loose forward. Looking forwards to a seeing where this goes.

Not sure if Argentina will dilute their 15 versus England. They need to stay in the top 6 for the RWC draw. The RC is going to be harder this year for them and losses against England will probably see them exit the top 6 with only the AI to regain position.

Otherwise Argentina will have a team seeded higher than them in their pool and probably in their round of 16 match. In other words fail to hit top 6 and you will play two top 6 teams before a QF. Hit top 6 and you will not play a top 6 side until the QF. That’s significant.

Conor O’Shea and Steve Aboud set up the Italian academy back then. Thus some of the current ascendancy of Italian rugby. Steve Aboud would seem to be an expert in this and happily the Italians have seen sense and rehired Aboud this year after closing the academy four years ago.

Wales had regional academies and the National Academy was a case of giveing 20-25 regional academy players across the country extra expert coaching. Clubs were stronger then and the clubs were encouraged by the WRU to have all national academy players given extra exposure to learning and to some of the many foreign starts in Wales then.

The initial tranche of money was mainly from the EU, so funding may have been an issue back then. Those 20-25 players were the Golden generation of household names we know from the 2010s etc.
