Shoot-out agony for Netherlands - but in rugby!

Netherlands have famously struggled at penalty shoot-outs in football through the years, and it seems they fare little better in rugby.

The extremely rare event of a rugby shoot-out came to pass in the European Under-20 Championship as Belgium took on Netherlands.

The match reached full-time with the scores locked at 30-30, leaving kicks at the posts as the only way to separate the teams.

And there was agony for the Dutch, as their neighbours prevailed after five efforts apiece.

I think Tom Lynagh might be the right guy for the future, although I do prefer his clubmate Harry McLaughlin-Phillips. But I wrote a piece saying that JOC should be in the matchday squad before the series, though I could not see him going straight in to start [knowing Joe].

I think it may have been Libbok getting beat on that final tackle!

Spot on. And perhaps this will be construed as arrogance, but the Boks obviously backed themselves to play a certain way against the Wallabies. And wanted to use this game to have a crack at the new tools.

As I’ve said, I am a much happier Bok supporter when we’re not the favourites and we have a point to prove. And everyone is being nasty and mean to us.

Dear South Africa, let us dine on humble pie

The only team that beat NZ in a knock out match outside a final and won were Australia in 1991 and that was without SA waiting for them in a final. They were very poor against England in a tight final. In the quarter final of 2007 France knocked NZ out in a huge effort and were beaten by England in the semi.

If you win a world cup you de facto get to be no1 in the rankings. This just means you won the world cup. If SA were playing NZ in the 2019 semi they would have been eliminated (NZ were better, see the pool match). If they had struggled through then England would have performed as England were easily better than Wales.

100%. The same goes with the missed tackle %. Looks high. Is high. But three missed tackles on one counter attacking line break for a try, for example, makes it look worse than it was.

I’m not convinced Jordan is in the mix yet. I also rate him but if he plays this year - maybe at the end of the year. I think he needs a standout year with the Sharks next season.

I said from game one of the Lions that O’Connor should be starting at 10. It almost doesn't matter whether he's the right man for the job or plays the right style or if he's really a 10 at all... they needed experience in the 10 shirt. Throwing Lynagh literally to the Lions was a poor decision. He did kind of ok but it's a bit like Slade playing ten for Exeter. Long term are they both the right guy? No. Are they the right guy for right now? Yes.

Didn't see the game but who was that getting utterly toasted by Wright for that final try? Not the one he stepped, the guy trying to cover across, running in quicksand.
