Stephen Perofeta back in action

Promising Blues first five eighth Stephen Perofeta’s Super Rugby return may be just around the corner.

The highly touted 20-year-old started in the No 10 jersey for the Blues A side on Friday afternoon.

Fellow Blues first five Otere Black stepped in as assistant coach as he continues to rehab an ACL injury.

After Perofeta’s injury, the Blues were reluctant to give a hard return date and set his recovery timeline at six weeks, potentially ruling him out from the side’s trip to South Africa over the next two weeks.

After losing both Black and Perofeta before the start of the regular season, Bryn Gatland has been thrust into Tana Umaga’s starting side at first five.

Gatland scored the Blues’ first try of the season against the Highlanders last week.

Both Perofeta and Gatland’s most impressive professional performances came during last year’s British and Irish Lions tour. Perofeta started at first five during the Blues’ victory over the Lions, while Gatland started for the Provincial Barbarians against his father’s Lions side.

NO. In the games hes played hes done well. No question. Its just that going by Razor picking him last year it shows he rates him and I cant see the latter moving on from him. Im just tempering all the enthusiasm for Narawa who just doesnt seem to be rated by the 3 wise men after one test. Fihaki will replace Telea. The returning Faiinganuku wil also be at 13 in the near future (anyone but Ioane who I hope never makes it back after the sabbatical)

We already have that every year Toko man.


I don’t really feel your NZ v Aus Table idea, that’s not what it’s about. It’s not about us v them, it’s about both teams being able to celebrate together, fans share stories etc.


If there is some desire for that type of concept, I’d be inclined to think it would be better to ahve a host city/stadia for the weekend, and fans pick/vote for an anzac team, and the country with the most selections can celebrate harder and take the kudos that year.

I took his comment to mean babying for any All Black, regardless of position.


In saying that, wingers in international rugby need to be much more proficient under the high ball and on D than in SR so I don’t necessarily agree with your comment.

Not for a outside back it’s not. It’s one of the rare positions were all the All Blacks really need you to do is finish/create scoring tries, true, but it is 3/4 positions out of 23.


Isn’t he 25 though? As far as any important measure stands? That’s really what I’m disappointed in never seeing'/knowing what eventuates lol

I think we have plenty of 12s and 8’s to lose, and when you say 4, losing Patrick would be less of a concern for me than loosing Mark.


The think with Mark is we’ve had it shared the fallout between Razor and MacDonald was over Razor overstepping his grounds in his preference for Reece over Tele’a. Now I wouldn’t normally be to perturbed by this, but we have a unique situation were Reece is the picture of a guy who’s not going to be able to keep his standards up, and Tele’a epitomizes effortlessness, and has only been in this game for 4-5 years, so are we really keeping a 30yo and throwing away a 23 yo?

I think they ramped up back to normal by the end of the season SC. It was a very different Blues campaign for him, and as much as people croon on about diversity in styles amongst the sides is best, it makes it much harder for the players to just jump right into a different team.


More of a choice over wingers than were to save a buck for me.
