Surprise new format: Trans-Tasman Super Rugby set to return in 2021

Rugby fans will see the return of trans-Tasman Super Rugby clashes next year with a six-week competition to be announced, according to a report.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the five New Zealand and five Australian Super Rugby franchises which each face-off once before a final between the top two sides of the competition.

According to the newspaper, the matches will begin in May following the 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa competition which was revealed earlier this week.

It means New Zealand franchises could play up to 14 matches in 2021, if they reach two finals, with seven home games if a trans-Tasman bubble is open by May.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the competition will be officially announced in the next week.

The schedule for the second installment of Super Rugby Aotearoa was announced on Tuesday, with 10 weeks of New Zealand derbies beginning on Friday February 26, with the Highlanders hosting the Crusaders in Dunedin.

The first round will finish with the Hurricanes entertaining the Blues in Wellington on Saturday February 27, while the Chiefs enjoy the bye in the opening week.

The Waikato franchise will begin their campaign in round two against the Highlanders in Hamilton.

Auckland rugby fans will have to wait a bit before they get to see action, with the Blues’ first home game at Eden Park coming in round three against the Highlanders.

There is a mixture of matches spread across all three weekend days, maintaining the popular Sunday afternoon clashes that returned in 2020.

The final between the top two sides after 10 weeks will take place on Saturday May 8, contending the T? K?tahi Aotearoa trophy.

New Zealand Rugby General Manager Professional Rugby & Performance Chris Lendrum said next year’s competition will build on the foundation the 2020 tournament laid.

“We saw how exciting this home and away format was … all five teams now know what’s required to compete and win every week. With the availability of the All Blacks locked in for round one, there are going to be fireworks from the opening whistle.

“It’s fantastic to have some certainty for fans, players and partners after what’s been a year of uncertainty. Confirming the 2021 draw is a significant milestone and a positive step for rugby in New Zealand and we’re thrilled to have our broadcast partner Sky come on board as naming rights sponsor.

“We’ve listened to the fans and our players and added a Final, which we think will provide a fitting climax to the competition.”

With four consecutive titles under their belt, the Crusaders are set to enter the competition as favourites once again.

NZ Rugby is also working closely with Rugby Australia over trans-Tasman matches between respective Super Rugby sides, and more details will be released shortly.

Love should get some time at 10. He’s clearly got the ability to be a second playmaker, but primarily at 15. Some time at 10, even just standing at first receiver, will only help his playmaking skills. He set up two tries with good distribution.

He kicks goals well. He could be a second B Barrett. But keep his main position at 15.

No full games on the IRU YT channel unfortunately, all on subscription? Looks a fairly good level (1A).

Yes I mean I wouldn’t really know the local ratio of origin here, but certainly as a province with less resources mine has a ratio that veers heavily towards club rep. The club stories are often the best so get probably an imbalanced proportion of coverage to where most players actually come from though.

Those were a couple of Ulster (regional) clubs too, good good. Those clubs/size towns are very much where you find most talent coming from (compared to the big city), so your productivity depends very much on your systems in place for scouting talent. With the more wealthy and popular sport of NRL (hence more info out there) I’ve seen some interesting studies on player origins in this respect, which I think would be a very balanced base of data to draw conclusions from.

Yes I’m wondering how those names as examples compare to the likes of Bryne getting squeezed out for a lack of places. I’m only thinking of effects far down the line as a result of Irelands #1 ranking and increased publicity/interest and how Irelands system will take advantage of them.

Regarding the Crusaders side . Great to see promising young lock Jamie Hannah back in the starting team. He has certainly been through the mill since debuting for the Crusaders, even before playing for Canterbury. All his hard work has paid off. Antonio Shalfoon , who has been rested for this match has been amazing locking with AB captain Scott Barrett. I really rate Jamie Hannah as one of the best young locks of which there are a few coming through. Including his Canterbury and Crusaders team mate Liam Jack. Father is Graham Jack ,he played for Canterbury and the Crusaders in the 1990’s. Older brother of Chris, who of course was an All Black.

Not sure what the ethical issue is. If it’s going for the money, it’s either do that or NZ rugby slowly dies as all the better players leave. So it’s the more lesser of two evils. Sell out a bit more as a Union, or the players sell out one by one.

Yes, the team was similar. But the two locks made a huge difference. Kaino wasn’t a lock and Tuipolutu has only very recently started playing close to his potential (his work rate was terrible until recently).

The Irish lineout maul wouldn’t have been the weapon it was on that day if Hansen started Whitelock and Retallick (or even two proper locks). Though they wouldn’t have been guaranteed to win.

Doing the new haka when the Irish were mourning a great of theirs didn’t help. The action at the end of that haka has been interpreted negatively and some see it as a but disrespectful.

Still if the All Blacks did their normal haka they wouldn’t have been guaranteed to win.
