Tadhg Furlong could face lengthy ban if found guilty of genital grab

The United Rugby Championship have confirmed that Ireland and Lions prop Tadhg Furlong has been cited following an incident in Leinster’s interpro derby win over Munster.

It is alleged that the tight-head grabbed the groin area of Munster’s Andrew Coombe’s in the 37th minute of Saturday’s match. Coombe’s complained to referee Andrew Brace but the TMO was unable to provide any video evidence at the time.

However, the matter has been taken further, with a statement from the URC saying, ‘the Citing Commissioner in charge has made a complaint about an act of foul play by the Player (Tadhg Furlong No.3) against opponent Gavin Coombes (No.8).

‘The Player has been cited under Law 9.27 – A player must not do anything that is against the spirit of good sportsmanship including but not limited to grabbing, twisting or squeezing the genitals.’

Details of the dicsciplinary hearing will be announced in due course, but if found guilty, Furlong will likely miss Ireland’s Nations Championship campaign.

Joe Marler received a 10-week suspension in March 2020 for grabbing the genitals of Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones during an England vs Wales Six Nations match.

In a more recent example, in October 2025, South Africa front-rower Jan-Hendrik Wessels received a nine-match suspension for grabbing Josh Murphy’s genitals in the Bulls’ URC win over Connacht.

A similar punishment for Furlong will rule him out for the remainder of the year.

If ban get rid of the contact

Its a team tactic. There are lots of pictures of their players at it. They’ll get away with as per usual. IRFU pop over the fence to World Rugby HQ 10 mins walk away and a few brandies and its gone.

You’re a bit of a moron aren’t you?

The video is very problematic for him. With the angle of his arm, you might have been able to argue it was accidental if it was just a quick lift to clear the player out, but he keeps his hand there for an extended period and even repeats the lifting motion.

Given what happened to that Saffa bloke without any evidence, Furlong should brace himself for an extended holiday.

Bet you a whiskey he get nothing and doesnt even attend the hearing in person

The video is in slow motion. His hand is only there as long as it takes to clear him out

Obviously decided to make sure he avoided any more flying lessons from the Boks next month… ✈️ 🤣

Probably (and hopefully) untrue but knowing both players likely an accident and a misunderstanding. Of course always worth looking into just to maintain the spirit of the game.

*Gavin Coombes, not Andrew. Though there was a welsh backrower back in the day by that name

Too late. The complaint was made and Furlong will face a lenghty ban once its gone this far. There was nothing in it from the video I saw but as its the same citing commissioner as JHW I think they will play safe.

Last year Jan-Hendrik Wessels got banned for something similar and there was very little evidence…so there is a precedent

The commission cited an unusual movement of JHW hand in that instance. The video i saw on Furlong was not clear at all but I expect the same response. JHW maintained his innocence. Interesting to see what Furlong does. He is very likely to get banned now.

Very doubtful this is true. Knowing Furlong’s character and lack of previous in this regard. Also, there was no provocation or inciting incident before this.

Images afterwards didn’t really show anything, so I’m surprised it has been cited. It just looks like Furlong is clearing Coombes out and hooks his arm under his leg. Any other contact is incidental to this.

Coombes’ character would also be equally valid

He is a decade into a professional career and has spent his entire rugby playing life clearing and being cleared at rucks

The gravity of what he has alleged has to be considered. He doesn't have previous for doing this

He clearly jerks his head back and reacts very strongly. Again, not something he would do lightly or often

Historically, there has been some awful dirt in this fixtures down the years but the worst of it was supposed to be long gone

Banning him for grabbing his balls is a complete waste if Time

I completely disagree. It isn't in the spirit of the game and isn't acceptable in any way to be grabbing the genitils of another man especially on a professional stage
