Teams named for PRO14 semi-final at Scotstoun

Ulster have made two changes to their back line as they attempt to win their way through to a first league final in six years.

The Irish province beat country rivals Connacht in the PRO14 quarter-finals at home in Belfast, but they must now travel to Scotland and beat Glasgow to reach their first showpiece decider since 2013’s defeat to Leinster at the RDS.

With firepower out wide likely to be crucial, Jacob Stockdale and Louis Ludik have recovered from injury to earn selection in the back three. Test winger Stockdale will line out at full-back, the position he initially filled on his way up through the ranks before making it into Joe Schmodt’s Ireland side on the wing.

Glasgow have also added firepower to their back line with DTH van der Merwe, the scorer of the decisive try when these same two clubs met in the 2015 semi-final, making his comeback following February surgery on a shoulder problem.

Co-captain Callum Gibbins returns to lead the side having not played since suffering a head injury against Saracens in the March Champions Cup quarter-final.

The sold-out league semi-final at Scotstoun will mark Stuart Hogg’s last home game for the Scottish club at the Warriors ground before his summer switch to Exeter.

Saracens to controversially rest England stars for Champions Cup KO game

At least 8 teams have no chance of winning (or making a final) and I stand by that. They have lost more games than they have won to reach the knock out stage. We may get an upset in the round of 1/16, but unlikely.

The likes of Ulster, Munster and Northhampton will always put out their strongest team for an elimination match, but Saracens obviously have no interest.

Harlequins are dangerous opponents but Leinster, Toulouse, La Rochelle etc are rarely surprised (unlike Bordeaux last year). That said the big pitch in Croke Park will suit Harlequins.

Warburton is bright and well informed. WRU should get him involved somehow. Players and coaches respect him which is cornerstone to successfully implement unpopular change.

Yeah it seemed like on a recent interview Robinson was saying they pretty much get their man these days when contracting, saying they let him leave essentially. Not sure they’d go too much further out of their way to get him back if that’s what you’re suggesting should have happened. No doubt he ended up playing a lot better after he decided to leave though.


Have to think you’re going to believe something is seriously wrong with NZR come 2027! Seriously I can’t see much movement away from the 3 they have now, Dmac, Beaudy, and Pero. Some exciting talent coming through but I can’t see them having enough rough edges taken off to out bid Richie for instance. That said, having those three disrupted for a returning Richie wouldn’t be the best thing either.

How many teams is he eligible for? Just Tonga? The way Pellegrini is playing he might need to change his attitude to defence because the slow he gets, the further you get into the midfield.


Why would be great for Tonga. I’ve said it before, he’d be the worlds best playmaking 12 if he switched and it’s probably going to be the only way he can get onto the field in 2027 with Dmac and Pellegrini ahead of him. Would be great if he did come back to SR as a bargain but does he have an option for Fiji too if his nephew is playing for them?

Not really, we conceded 24 points including two yellow cards. Ireland’s attack was awesome, and our defence was HUGE, but we still needed 3 tries to beat them - So the attack was crucial.


In the 3 years leading up to the 2023 World Cup Ireland conceded more than 28 points only twice (one of those times being against NZ). SA managed only 1 try and 8 points against them. So you could argue it was one of the best attacking displays of the previous 3 years.


Carter is a ridiculously high bar to hold people to to decide if they’re good or not.


I recall Sexton playing in that QF, Ireland having more ball and possession, and playing against 14 men for 20 minutes, and not winning the game.
