'Tenacious' De Klerk set to join Sale

South Africa scrum-half Faf de Klerk

Faf de Klerk will join Sale Sharks from next season as the Premiership club look to replace Mike Phillips at scrum-half.

Phillips hung up his boots – adorned with the words ‘I did it my way’ for his final game – after Sale’s 27-24 win over Bath on Saturday.

And on Monday, Sale announced the impending arrival of South Africa international De Klerk from Super Rugby outfit Lions on a three-year deal.

“I am made up that Faf has decided to join us next season,” said Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond.

“He is tenacious with a fantastic work rate – he dictates the tempo and direction of the game and I think he will fit in well both with our style of play, and with a young, ambitious squad.

“He’s an unbelievable ball carrier, has a solid kicking game and he is exciting around the pitch. He sees the weakness in his opposition and can leverage this to his advantage.

“He’s young but has massive experience and this will be crucial in helping us to build on the foundations we have put in place this year.”

Since making his Springboks debut against Ireland in June last year, De Klerk has made 11 international appearances.

Jordie is great off the bench and played super on Saturday. But Northampton’s strategy was always going to be to try and have a winning lead at half time. I knew NH were putting it up to us in the first half but I was confident if teh scoreline was close at HT. The 3 try blitz was a real shocker. And that turned the outcome 50:50.

Defenders Beaten: 5th (22)

Tries: 4th (7)

Turnovers: 1st (18)

For context on that last one the next best is Doris on 13 followed by J.Willis on 10

The draw didn’t deny Ireland the RWC cup. But it definitely gifted SA it. SA were not even the best team in their pool!

The RWC does find the team that wins a messed up tournament with a messed up draw. It hasn’t found the best team since 2019 though. Deal with it.

As delicious a banquet of Simmons fare as ever! So many great lines and irreverences that are so light they offend only the pious. This was a match for the ages: a magnificent contest where the 16/1 second horse in the race trumped the odds and worked the magic of the gods of sporting hubris.


I have held off from Pollockmania for a while (I saw him in Cardiff but that was a free ride) but this was top rugby in a hostile environment. He may be Gazza-like daft as a brush and the biggest cock of the walk since Campese, yes and more, but he bursts with mad energy and Bothamesque self-belief. He empties the bars to watch him, as they say. The Aussies will love to hate him!
