The new Wales team-mate Liam Williams backs to be a 'world beater'
Wales full-back Liam Williams has taken on the responsibility of helping newly called-upon squad member Ellis Mee this Guinness Six Nations, who he backs to be “pretty good”.
Just months after moving to the Scarlets from Championship outfit Nottingham, 21-year-old full-back Mee was selected in Warren Gatland’s initial 34-man Wales squad as one of two uncapped players alongside Ospreys fly-half Dan Edwards (the uncapped Ben Warren has since been called up).
Having emerged out of relative obscurity this season, Williams has compared Mee’s career path to his own, as the 92-cap Wales international had not been picked up by any academies in his youth.
Ahead of teaming up with his Wales team-mates for their pre-Six Nations training camp, the 33-year-old singled out the Scarlets full-back on the For the Love of Rugby podcast when asked by his former British and Irish Lions team-mate Anthony Watson who he backs to become a “world beater”.
“I don’t know the guy personally, but I’ve watched a couple of games for the Scarlets and Ellis Mee,” the Saracens star said.
“I was speaking to Olly Hartley [Saracens team-mate] today at training, and he played with him for Nottingham last year or the year before.
“He’s kind of like me, I guess, as in my story – I came out of nowhere and in just a year-and-a-half went from playing semi-pro to playing for Wales.
“He looks raw and I just think he needs a bit of help with that. I think that’s partly down to me as well. I’d say that’s part of my job when I’m in there to help those younger guys.
“I think he’ll be pretty good.”
Williams also spoke highly of Edwards, who could be called upon frequently this Six Nations, with a dearth of fit fly-halves available for Gatland. He said: “Dan Edwards the 10, he’s been playing out of his skin for the Ospreys, been controlling the game really well, his kicking game is great. So it’s quite an exciting time for Welsh rugby with some of the youngsters coming through, but it’s about time we start winning games now.”
