'There's positives': Vern Cotter staying optimistic despite narrow defeat

When you thought nothing could get worse than it already was, the Blues have lost another Super Rugby Pacific game in the 2025 season, piling the pressure on Blues head coach Vern Cotter to get his team back up and running.

They were close, and if it wasn’t for the width of the right goal post at FMG Stadium Waikato last night, the Auckland-based side’s season may be looking slightly more positive.

Three late scratchings didn’t help, adding to the already packed injury list, headlined by Beauden Barrett’s hand fracture.

Cameron Suafua, Caleb Clarke and Ofa Tu’ungafasi all missed Saturday evening’s 2024 grand final rematch, all nursing injuries that may keep them out for next week’s matchup against the Crusaders.

Despite the Blues sitting at a disappointing ninth place, with the Crusaders next week, Cotter was upbeat about his team’s performance.

“I thought we were a bit clunky at the start, and then when we started taking a little bit more initiative to see some simple things.

“It comes down to, we always use that fine margin, but it is, it’s just that conversion that shaves the post and the yellow card probably hurt us as well.

“I’m really happy with the attitude. I think we can build from it,  so we missed three points today, we’d like to have four, we’ve got one, and we’ll be working next week to get as many as we can.”

Cotter feels like the results at the start of the season haven’t showcased his squad’s effort, saying that there are positives from these last couple of losses.

“It’s getting better week on week, even if you look at the score line against the Chiefs four weeks ago, there’s improvement. So we just need to have that mindset to improve.

“I feel like Patty and the boys have got it, I think the whole group not just the 23-man squad but everybody involved in the team, want to do better and are trying to improve.

“I felt right from Monday, and I thought we saw a bit of it tonight, I saw quite a lot of it today. So you just take it, you keep moving forward.

Although the Blues are without star playmaker Beauden Barrett with a fractured hand, Cotter welcomed back Stephen Perofeta into the lineup, coming off the bench and showing positive signs in his first short stint of the season.

“We’re just really happy to have him back, during the week, he attempted a couple of goal kicks, and just said, look, I’m not ready yet.

“So it’s nice having him back, he had some nice touches, he’s been working really hard. He hasn’t played since November so he’s a calm, composed person that thinks well, constructs the game well.

The Blues relentless red zone efficiency is pretty impressive. I wouldn't rule them out in the winter playoffs.

Near end of game, converted try required, 2 penalties against chiefs in play - probable yellow card - why kick it to sideline and make conversion hard? Go for near posts, worst case you get penalty and chiefs down to 14 - seems like scoring try a dumb play in these situations - fumble it, opposition gets yellow and you get to go for try again and period of time against 14

Leinster cleanse palette with record URC scoreline against Zebre

My name is Solenn Bonnet, and I am a single mother navigating the challenges of raising my two-year-old child while trying to make ends meet. I came across a trading platform that promised astonishing daily profits of 18%. The allure of such a high return on investment was too tempting to resist, and I found myself drawn into cryptocurrency trading. Excited by the prospect of financial freedom, I invested a significant amount of my savings, totaling over 5.7 BTC. However, what started as a hopeful venture quickly turned into a nightmare. The platform was a scam, and I lost everything I had invested. The emotional toll of this loss was immense; I felt devastated and helpless, struggling to provide for my child and keep up with my bills. In my desperate attempt to recover my funds, I sought help from various recovery experts. Unfortunately, I encountered numerous fraudulent individuals who claimed they could help me retrieve my lost money. Each time I reached out, I was met with disappointment and further scams, which only deepened my despair. Last year was one of the most challenging periods of my life, filled with anxiety and uncertainty about my financial future. Feeling overwhelmed and at a loss, I confided in a close friend from church about my situation. She listened compassionately and shared her own experiences with financial difficulties. Understanding my plight, she introduced me to Tech Cyber Force Recovery, a group of skilled hackers known for their expertise in recovering lost funds. Skeptical yet hopeful, I decided to reach out to them as a last resort. Their services came at a higher cost, but my friend generously offered to help me with a partial payment. I was amazed by how quickly they responded and began the recovery process. Their team was professional, efficient, and incredibly supportive throughout the entire ordeal. To my relief, they successfully recovered more than I had lost to those heartless scammers. This was truly transformative, and I felt a sense of relief and gratitude that I hadn’t felt in a long time. I strongly encourage anyone who has faced similar challenges or fallen victim to scams to reach out to Tech Cyber Force Recovery. If you’ve invested in a fraudulent platform like I did, they are highly capable of helping you reclaim your hard-earned money. Don’t lose hope; there is a way to recover what you’ve lost.
