Thomas du Toit

Thomas ‘Tank’ du Toit is set to become one of the heaviest Springboks ever after he was called in to provide frontrow cover this week.

Du Toit is set to join the tour squad today in Cardiff and if he is capped will become one of heaviest Springboks of all time. According to his Shark’s profile, the 136kg prop is a kilogram heavier than both Os du Randt and Rudi (Vleis) Visagie, both who weighted in at 135kg, and six kilos heavier than 130kg Ollie Le Roux.

Tendai Mtawarira sustained a groin injury in Saturday’s 35-6 victory over Italy in Padua, and while the experienced front ranker will be afforded the maximum time to recover, it was decided to call up Du Toit as extra cover.

Meanwhile, the Springbok squad arrived in Cardiff on Sunday following their victory over Italy. The match in Cardiff is the final Test of the Springboks’ November Tour.

Razor's 2024 All Blacks Christmas wish list

"It seems like the idea of Ardie Savea moving to openside flanker is no longer on the table"

Says who? Savea was picked on the open side, with Wallace Sititi at 8, against France. It makes no difference to Savea’s game, whatsoever and allows Sititi to play in his preferred position. It also provides an option to bring in a third loose forward that may provide a better lineout option and a big body to compete with some of the big bodies found in other teams.

It was unfortunate that Finau was injured so early on against France before he had a chance to show how he might combine with Savea and Sititi, and there is still a possibility that Hoskins Sotutu might be effective alongside them too.

Don’t count out viable options.
