Top 14 budgets for 2018/19 revealed - reports

Multiple reports have emerged in the French media today highlighting the budgets of the Top 14 clubs for the 2018/19 season.

Stade Français sit top of the pile with a budget of €34m, with the formerly financially-challenged Parisian side benefiting from their takeover by Hans-Peter Wild last year, with the German billionaire unafraid of investing heavily into the club.

It comes just a year after a mooted merger between Stade and their local rivals, Racing 92, in a move that was considered more accurately to be a takeover by Racing and their owner, Jacky Lorenzetti. By contrast now, Racing sit at 9^th in the financial table, with a budget of €24m.

Perennial French heavyweights Clermont (€32.5m), Toulouse (€32m) and Toulon (€30m) follow closely behind Stade, whilst the recent upward trajectory of Lyon sees them at 5^th with a budget of €29.8m.

Montpellier (€27m), La Rochelle (€25.6m) and Pau (€25m) all also boast budgets larger than Racing, but the Parisian side will be investing slightly more than current Top 14 champions Castres, whose budget sits at €23.7m.

Following up are Bordeaux-Bègles (€23m), Grenoble (€18m) and Perpignan (€16m), with Agen the lowest spenders for the upcoming season, committing to a budget of just €13.8m.

The task that Agen face on such a relatively small budget is well-illustrated by the expenditure at the top of the Pro D2, where Nevers (€12.4m), Brive (€12.2m), Oyonnax (€11m) and Bayonne (€11m) operate on similar outgoings.

With five teams in the Top 14 spending more than double what Agen will this season and a further four clubs operating on €10m or more above the levels of the club from the south-west, Agen will need to punch well above their weight to avoid the drop this season.

Can Racing and Castres continue to fight it out at the top of the table in the wake of new money arriving elsewhere in the competition and can Stade translate their big spending into success on the pitch?

The 2018/19 Top 14 season is set to be one of the most intriguing yet.

Not being unaminous would make sense, with the media backgrounding on talks to Cheika and Lancaster.

I still wish something more had developed with Lancaster.

I worry that worse case is that Reds don’t fire a shot in the finals this year and then regress next year…where would that leave the faith in Kiss.

What can we expect from Farrell's Lions squad? The key questions answered

You know, its difficult to disagree with anything written here. We shall all have our delights and disappointments but I think that, in Farrell, we have a supreme professional who will pick on merit. I am not quite as sold on the captaincy being a two man competition. Doris has an injury and also a less than perfect rapport with officials. Itoje is similarly not the best communicator and can get on the wrong side of the referee. On the flip side, I am not sure who the alternatives are. Anyway, I have my glass half full (of whisky) for tomorrow.

Correct. Blues have really not adjusted properly to what is now a fluid game requiring the involvement of all 15 players. Crunching up the middle has its place but the sides that also have the ability to play wide have a distinct advantage when defences are forced to compress and leave space outside. The 3 NZ teams that do this are the Chiefs, Crusaders & Hurricanes.

This article will annoy the hell out of SC, who will drone on and on about how bad ALB is…

The Chiefs issue isn’t the fact they’re missing ALB. It’s when their discipline falls ill (especially in the forwards), it spreads around the team like a disease and they can’t get rid of it by end of the game.

They’ve won a few games without DMac before, but Jacomb was particularly poor last weekend. Unfortunately Trask is out injured. And when Shooter Stevenson is cold, he’s done. For some reason they keep picking Bradley Slater at hooker, who is nowhere near in the same league as Taukei’aho and McAlister.

I doubt they’ll beat the mighty Crusaders on their own turf, who have turned a corner in the last month after getting smashed by the Chiefs and Moana Pasifika at the start of the season. Both teams have their weaknesses though and it should be an epic game. DMac and Sititi need to start for them to have any chance.
