Two-Test All Black Folau Fakatava re-signs with Highlanders
Folau Fakatava will remain in Highlanders colours until at least the 2027 season after signing a new contract with the club and New Zealand Rugby.
A highly touted prospect who made his Highlanders debut at 19, Fakatava served as Aaron Smith’s understudy before succeeding the iconic All Black in the No. 9 jersey. Now, the 25-year-old finds himself locked into a new selection battle with Nathan Hastie, with more young talent coming through the ranks in the form of U20 captain Dylan Pledger.
Having played both of his All Blacks Tests in 2022, Fakatava will soon be eligible to represent his Tongan roots, should he choose to do so.
Regardless, the Hastings Boys High product has found a home in Dunedin and re-committed to the club that took him in as a teenager.
“I am looking forward to this young team developing in the future. We have an exciting, hard-working group here and are well led by Jamie Joseph. I believe we can achieve some great things if we stay focused on improving,” said Fakatava.
Joseph has been an eagle-eyed recruiter since rejoining the club he once led to a maiden Super Rugby title, and has backed his creative halfback to keep growing and leading the team’s attack.
“He is an X-factor player for sure and sparks a lot within our attack structure. He’s just getting better and better with experience and, at only 25 years of age, has a lot more to offer the Highlanders and New Zealand rugby,” Joseph said.
The Highlanders’ press release stated: “The Highlanders see Fakatava as a key pillar in their continued development and quest for success.”
