URC statement: Plug pulled on two games in SA

The URC have been forced to postpone two games in South Africa after an outbreak of gastro in a number of camps in South Africa.

Both Glasgow Warriors and Ulster are unable to field teams as they labour under a virus that has broken out across both European sides.

Dan McFarland’s Ulster were set to face the Cell C Sharks, while Franco Smith’s Glasgow were set to play the Lions in Round 6 of the tournament.

Rumours began circulating over the issue this morning and it was has now been confirmed by the URC that the two fixtures involving the sides will not go ahead.

“The Round 6 United Rugby Championship fixtures involving Glasgow Warriors, Ulster Rugby, Cell C Sharks and Emirates Lions have been postponed,” a statement from the URC reads. “Due to gastroenteritis infections it is not possible for Ulster or Glasgow Warriors to field full playing squads.

“In order to ensure a duty of care towards the players involved and given the medical advice received from all key stakeholders, the United Rugby Championship has made the decision to postpone the fixtures.

“The league will now move to examine potential dates to reschedule the games and will update in due course.”

South Africa has entire teams playing in different leagues. That is a massive difference because their players are still familiar with each other when they are in the Springbok setup.

New Zealand will never have the Blues or Hurricanes or whoever pull anchor and go join a UK competition.

It will all be players dotted around all over the place.

So when they come back into the All Blacks, yeah they’ll have more experience with other styles, but they will be team mates with guys they’ve never even met.

And they’d have been playing France and Uk, will they still have NZ instincts of using skills and a fast paced game?

Or will they want a drinks break and a massage every time there is a scrum?

Oh and if you're talking about the article I think Beaver is talking to the fans. He's telling them these are the players to sacrifice money, they are the ones we should support. Not saying you need to make that sacrifice to be any good. All those boks would have held out for going overseas.

Yeah, Aus had that crash as well, cant remember why they said. Players didn't last I don't think.


And theirs no league in the world that the players could go to and turn around that change it popularity. If only the French were English! This elite league talked about in US and around could change things? Would only need to be NRL level quality imo.

Restrictions will only make a handful of players available. Whether they can compete, well, they won't be selected if they can't. Simple really.


Again, I'm not proposing open eligibilty. That would be disastrous.

A player leaves at 22? Restrictions kick in. Ineligible. That can happen now e.g. Leciester Fainganuku. Nothing changes.


And umm yes, eligibility doesn't guarantee selection. It's merely eligibilty.

I dont stand by anyone. I didnt select the team of the year. Plenty of people with a lot more rugby knowlege than me selected DM at 10 in the world team of the year. You should check why he was selected at 10 tho. Go look at stats for the test year. He is exceptional in all area's.

Jasper Wiese is a shite Alex Drombardt! If you want stats check theirs over the last 4 years in the English prem. However, facts have never been your thing or friend just regurgitating the same old brain dead lines.


Wiese wouldn’t make the Irish, English,Argentinan, NZ, French teams. He wouldn’t make the bench. Also the welsh with a 34 year old Toby Falateau or Dempsey in Scotland are arguably better 8’s.


The difference is by the end of his career Doris will have undoubtedly held more medals and be held in higher esteem.


Though I doubt this will get through to you as anyone who would make the comparison between the two in the first place is an absolute dribbling idiot. Though Oscar P is your sporting hero so therefore, I shouldn’t have expecting any decency or semblance of truth from you…..

You pick them to play in the XVs, or just sign them up to a NZ Super side.


They've got to be bothered with doing that first. They don't with league or ones in Europe. I would like it if the AB's had a much bigger global team to look at the whole world than just domestically though, their own version of the NFL's IPP program would be cool!

Excellent article Nick. One point I'll make is that Wales has won more championships than France or England in the past 20 years after next to nothing the previous 25. At least the regions have been better centres of excellence than the clubs as they were prior to the Celtic League.
