Ulster boss Richie Murphy levels accusation at Leinster after heavy loss
Ulster head coach Richie Murphy has questioned the legality of Leinster’s approach at the breakdown following his side’s 41–17 defeat in the United Rugby Championship at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday night.
Dan Sheehan scored a second-half hat-trick for a much-changed Leinster side, who also claimed a penalty try and further scores through Tommy O’Brien, Thomas Clarkson and Garry Ringrose. Cormac Izuchukwu and Matthew Dalton replied for Ulster, who saw Dave McCann yellow carded for the penalty try offence.
Speaking after the game, Murphy voiced frustration at what he described as Leinster’s tactics at the ruck.
“It was a massive effort from our lads, you see it all the way to the end of the game, which is something that over the last number of weeks that I think is really starting to come to the fore. Very proud of the effort.
“There are definitely things in our game that we can improve pretty quickly and some things that just frustrate in or around breakdown. Leinster are tough to play at the breakdown, especially if they’re allowed dirty the breakdown as much as they do, it’s then very hard to get quick ball to play off,” said a clearly riled Murphy.
“We scored 17 points against them. No one has scored for the last couple of weeks against them. That gives us something. Going in there, we had a bit of a plan. We couldn’t quite execute it. Again, it comes down to trying to create that quick ruck ball off that first, second phase.
“We probably weren’t accurate enough ourselves, but there was a couple of times when lads would line up at the back of a tackle and guys are on the side of a ruck. It’s very difficult to play against. Their line speed is incredible, but is it always coming from an onside position? I’d question that.”
He also wasn’t happy that Leinster seemed to get the best of the scrum-calls, despite Ulster appearing to be the physically dominant side at the set-piece.
“The scrum dominance they had in the first half, we didn’t feel that was right. We felt they were stepping around the corner and the breakdown, go and have a look yourself.”

Seriously? Not even one last petty insult from you for old times sake…
More deflection and speculation Duck ?
As you have told people in other posts who do not address your points - your getting boring so I will just close on that !
If you prefer to delude yourself that no conversations took place about TB views on returning to Leinster, then who am I to burst your bubble…
You still have not addressed my points Duck ! Laughable indeed - your normal deflection and of course TB went directly to Munster from Scarlett’s without any approach to him from Leinster though of course you stated otherwise ! Nuff said !
“some of those players often see their future in rugby better served as 1st team players elsewhere than reserve’s in Leinster . One such player is Tadhg Beirne”
Laughable, nuff said…
As usual Duck , your response is both factually incorrect and full of your own ill founded assertions and self importance.
In your earlier post you stated that Leinster had approached TB with a view to returning - now that I have shown this to be false, you have altered your position
asserting that he was not prepared to return to Leinster . How do you know this ?
You Don’t - but like all your posts you attempt to imply your opinion as fact !
You stated that I said TB left Leinster of his own volition - that is just an outright
Lie ! I in fact said that Leinster had released him .
For once try and get your facts right , but then facts and the truth might actually
upset your diatribe !
You'd know all about that…
You sure talk like a bok. Is a wannabe bok even worse?
Keeping going Eddie. I love when you aggressively refer to your own points as ‘salient’ - full maniac mode. Very amusing.
I bet you write strongly worded letters to nations and organisations that have wronged you?
Plenty of opinion Ikea, you’re just a little short on solid ground…
Nailed it zama!
Ofc they do, it’s all down to the THREE club structures (that the IRFU appointed and oversee) totally failing isn’t it?
Meanwhile, I’ve got a bridge to sell if you’re interested…
So Connacht and Ulster (remember this whole discussion started with Ulsters imbalanced treatment) can just go whistle can they??
Indeed. He’s even at his most right while being most wrong.
Some operator!
You, of all people, should not accuse anyone of lacking integrity.
Ed spouts another bucket of lumpy shyte. “Disseminate the thick from thin in my bucket of shyte or Im right!” says he.
You are inventing points you cant substantiate. You are proving yourself to be dishonest and a BS artist for all this site to see. Show some self respect and start arguing with integrity.
IRFU funding. Source Irish Times, Gerry Thornley, article yesterday
Munster have played major matches in the Aviva and Croke Park. There are three stadiums in Munster alone with > 45k capacity which is in the Aviva range.
If Munster make a CC quarter or semi they could play in Croke Park.
You are just pulling this nonsense out of your backside. You’re biased against Ireland, we get it. We are in a sport where the most successful RWC team is second in popularity to soccer in their country (where it is globally ranked 54). The same two rugby teams win every world cup and we imagine this is a ‘global game’. Then when teams improve and try to break through they are widely attacked with whatever fake weapons are closest to hand.
From The Irish Time yesterday:
Pray tell us how exactly the IRFU strengthens the pathway for the other three without diluting Leinster then? Just how exactly do they address the unavoidable facts that Dublin is the biggest urban population with the greatest volume of potential players on its doorstep? And how exactly do they address the prevalence of Dublin privates school academies, supported by external funding, that the other provinces either simply don’t have, or have on a micro scale? 10% of the wages from a dozen or so central contracts, that’s split three ways, won’t even touch the sides!
Cant wait for the answer to this one…
Yep.
It’s also why David Humphreys as performance director is very smart business.
His legal background and recent governance roles help him no end.
I see, you just apologise for them and their doping ways. Without supporting them.
There’s a name for that too…
I wouldn’t mind, but in the interview, Richie didn’t focus on Leinster too much. He defo mentioned the legality in the scrum and ruck, but it was a throwaway remark of a frustrated coach and he basically said go and look at it yourself. It was nothing worth reporting on and Rugby Pass have jumped all over it like flies on sh1t!
I yield to your obviously superior knowledge of Irish rugby.
Point stands, he was moved on when he was no longer valued as a priority by Leinster, just like Beirne, Jordi Murphy, Jack McGrath, Marty Moore and almost all the others you mentioned. Trying to say that Leinster have shipped real talent to Ulster, or anywhere else that has proven to deliver is frankly laughable. Even the one example that could have been quoted as rated talent when they left, Carberry to Munster, ended in abject failure.
Bottom line is this: the playing field across the provinces is far from level and arguing otherwise is both futile and laughable.
As I said in my previous post please try to keep up. Cooney left Leinster and went to Connacht for 3 years before he went to Ulster. He left Leinster 2 years before JGP joined them. Luke McGrath was the player who he lost his place to, not that he was ever a fixture in the team. How could you possibly lose 3 years? Very hard to take you seriously after that comment. Where is your source that the IRFU give more money to Leinster than the other Irish clubs? As to the non iq players Munster brought Snyman to Ireland and previously had players of the calibre of Doug Howlett and Christian Cullen on their books. I never complained about their spending power then as I was happy that an Irish team could recruit players of their stature.
And yet, as ever, no evidence presented to underpin your false assertions when challenged. There’s a name for that and it’s ly…g gob…ite!
Whinge whinge whinge.
We even have electricity in our schools. Imagine.
Then you really should stop replying.
Go on. See if you can?!
Jeez, if you think that’s an argument then you really are the poster boy for an Irish education!
That might, just might be the first thing you’ve said that could be accurate. Subject to you citing the sources of your assertions ofc. Pity it’s got absolutely no relevance to the discussion at hand though…
Refer to above.
Connacht generate more money - and profit - than the SA national union…
Use your right hand for better things than typing, Eddie.
And yet still no argument presented on why…
Still wrong.
Oh Richie, get over it.
If it's so obvious what Leinster are doing then why could your coaching not find a way to negate it?
It’s seems the Irish took a page out of tge AB'S book on how to grey the rules in their favour.
Pot kettle black, all teams do it to an extent, Ulster were no angels in those rucks, you can be mad if you want but he who has not sinned may cast the first stone…
I think that’s the first time I’ve heard an Irish coach step up and call out Leinster for what they do at the breakdown and also constantly infringing the offside line. It’s exactly the same with Ireland too funnily enough!
Very well said indeed Richie Murphy. 👏👏👏
If teams don’t try to gain an advantage at the ruck or other aspects of play they will be a remote second best. Glad to say Leinster will compete at the breakdown. If Ulster keep slagging leinster then maybe we’ll stop giving them our outcasts. (McGrath, Moore, Murphy, Timoney,Jones, Cooney< Jack Murphy and a few others.
