This is a smart idea, team sports is always about attracting the defense to one side of the field then quickly moving it to the other side to exploit the space and angle of the opposition.

It’s past time that Eden Park was replaced by a new centrally located, covered, rectangular, stadium.

Focus on rugby, league, association football, and concerts etc. Cricket is not worth the extra spend and reduction of fan experience for rugby, league, and association football. It means that New Zealand will never host another cricket world cup. But we might get a cricket world cup every 50 years.

Nothing like that Spew, Springboks historically played to create and compound the stress on the opposition, patiently waiting for opportunities to arise and then strike.

Tony ball takes the waiting bit out of the equation; it dilutes the intensity of modern-day defenses and makes it spread its attention and resources.

The game has changed. Teams have the wings sitting back to defend the kicks now. Plus teams use the kick to put the opposition in possession in their territory. Then pressure them to spill. Its been how teams like the crusaders have played for years. You cant barge through defensive lines anymore. Too well structured. Force turnovers and counter is the new way.

No I don’t think it was that they had to commit, since then suffocating defenses have just learned ways to get away with not committing.

Even then there was no benefit from a ruck, you simply won the ball back or lost it. Back in the rucking days there was a benefit to defending a ruck as you could hold it in, given time to reset, but even if that was a law now you’d see defences learn how to do that with only minimal defenders, leaving more players in the line.

Wow you’ve been coming out with some unclickbaity and reasonable opinion pieces Hamish. Has there been some change or have a couple of errant Springbok kicks just bounced your way?

I think the maul is still seen as a net loss because the defenders gain a free 10 meters as soon as you roll forward.

Well, if we become dominant in the forward play in particular the maul that will change defenses and open up room for our backs. These things are not mutually exclusive. More co-dependent. A multi-tiered armory of templates is what makes champion sides. The ABs from 2010-2016 were able to play several ways. Indeed, many of the great All Black teams were able to do this. I therefore think your article is looking at a multi-dimensional issue in a singular way. The maul being added as a greater weapon will ultimately open space for the backs, as teams bring players in to counter it. Actually, that’s how old school footy was, and why cully and co got space, the forwards had to commit not fan out.

England are favourites for this RWC. Again, Really??

And why are we choosing to ignore history, ie that they have been for almost every RWC ... & therefore are World Rugby's men or women, greatest chokers; that that cliche'd 'stiff up lip positive'ism' is rolled out by English sides  pre any sports tournament?? ... before they lose badly or again just choke.
