The final of the HSBC SVNS Series circuit in Vancouver between the Black Ferns Sevens and the Fiji Women’s Sevens team went exactly as planned for Cory Sweeney’s New Zealand side, scoring in the first 45 seconds of the encounter, before running away with their second victory of the 2025 SVNS competition.

Sweeney’s side was dominant throughout the tournament, scoring 237 points and only conceding 43 points across the action at Vancouver’s BC Place.

Michaela Brake continued her electric form over the course of the tournament, and the Black Ferns Sevens were helped by inspired performances from both Jorja Miller and captain Sarah Hirini.

Risi Pouri-Lane, who won the final’s player of the match, scored the opening try in the final after just 35 seconds.

The Black Ferns Sevens won the ball back off the kickoff after a Fiji player was penalised for holding on, before receiving a yellow card for delaying the restart.

Pouri-Lane created the space for herself, sending the Fijian defender the wrong way with a left-to-right dummy.

The Black Ferns Sevens continued to push for more points, taking advantage of the extra player, and scoring another try as Manaia Nuku scampered through under the posts.

On the stroke of halftime, Miller took the initiative to take a quick tap on their own side of halfway, taking on the Fijian defender down the short side.

Miller fended away from one, before proving too strong and too fast for the last covering Fijian defender, to score 15 meters in from touch.

Brake, Mahina Paul and Maia Davis all crossed the white line in the second half to extend the Black Ferns Sevens lead, to an unassailable 34 points.

SVNS Series Vancouver commentator and former All Black Mils Muliaina asked Black Ferns Sevens player of the match Risi Pouri-Lane about what it means to this group to win the Vancouver title.

“Yeah, it’s been an awesome weekend. Firstly, just want to thank the Fiji girls. They played an awesome tournament, and an awesome game,” Pouri-Lane told Muliaina.

“We knew they were going to be physical right from the start.

“But man, I’m just so proud of the girls’ efforts this whole weekend, it’s been awesome. I think every tournament there’s always a shakeup, we’ve got to be prepared for whatever.”

“The best that we can prepare is by focusing on ourselves and what we can bring to the game.”

I was trying to offer entering all four Aupiki teams in fixtures if you guys just put the two games mentioned up as curtain-raisers for SUPER games you already put up but these teams are crammed with BLACK FERNS and deserve the chance to be followed too.The offer still stands if you reply when games listed but i may have to wait a day before teams are released!

Andy Farrell answers burning Owen Farrell Lions question

I can understand negotiations for Kinghorn, White, and Ribbans. All three are playing very, very well at the current time. Kinghorn has been a leading contended for some time now; Ribbans looks as powerful as he’s ever been; while on the evidence of the most recent Six Nations, White benches behind JGP at Scrumhalf.

However, noone in their right mind should be considering Kyle Sinckler, Courtney Lawes, nor Owen Farrell. Sinckler looks unfit and can barely move around the field with any great urgency. He would be a liability on tour to Australia. Lawes is clearly ‘enjoying life’ in ProD2, and his rugby looks every bit second tier level now.

As for Farrell, not only has he been plagued by poor form and injury since moving to Racing, even the much vaunted ‘kicking record’ has long since been debunked as a USP with a percentage that simply does not stand up to scrutiny. That leaves only the intangible (desperate…) claim he would add ‘leadership’, which in a Lions squad resplendent with talent and international caps is I’m afraid, much like Farrell, a complete non-starter.

Willis is the elephant in the room…a leader and standout option for one of the best club teams in the World. Yet still a relative unknown at Test Match level. I could well see him being included on the tour - and it would prove quite the headache for the RFU if he delivers. But Back Row is so competitive across all three positions, and with genuine World Class talent there too. I’m just not sure the Lions need him.
