Watch: Lions PR department refute Sean O'Brien's claims 'line by line'

Lions defend coaching panel

Lions chief executive John Feehan has defended Warren Gatland in the wake of O’Brien’s criticism of his coaching panel on Wednesday night.

“I said all along that I think we had the best coaching team available and I think they proved that in what we achieved in New Zealand,” said Feehan.

“To draw a series with the All Blacks, who had not lost a Test match at home for eight years was a remarkable result, and Warren and the coaches deserve huge credit for that.”

“People will always have their views on what could have been done better but the fact is that, against all the odds and with limited preparation time, this squad became only the second Lions team in history to either win or draw a series in New Zealand in 13 attempts.”

“That achievement cannot be underestimated.”

In reaction to Feehan’s comments the Irish radio station who broke the story had this to say:

Razor's 2024 All Blacks Christmas wish list

"It seems like the idea of Ardie Savea moving to openside flanker is no longer on the table"

Says who? Savea was picked on the open side, with Wallace Sititi at 8, against France. It makes no difference to Savea’s game, whatsoever and allows Sititi to play in his preferred position. It also provides an option to bring in a third loose forward that may provide a better lineout option and a big body to compete with some of the big bodies found in other teams.

It was unfortunate that Finau was injured so early on against France before he had a chance to show how he might combine with Savea and Sititi, and there is still a possibility that Hoskins Sotutu might be effective alongside them too.

Don’t count out viable options.
