'We might just see him': Shaun Stevenson tipped for All Black debut

Ex-All Black John Kirwan is tipping a debut for Chiefs fullback Shaun Stevenson as the side prepares to take on the Wallabies at the MCG in Melbourne.

Super Rugby Pacific’s form player has not been seen in action for the All Blacks despite being called up initially as injury cover for Blues winger Mark Telea.

Telea missed the opener against Argentina along with Will Jordan, who was deliberately left at home, allowing for Emoni Narawa to debut on the right wing.

Both players returned to face South Africa on the left wing at Mt Smart in the 35-20 win.

But Kirwan believed that the All Blacks are dealing with injuries that has opened the door for Stevenson to get a run as the players in doubt are at risk of missing the World Cup.

“I’m hearing whispers down the hallway. We don’t know if it’s really true or not but that there are a couple of niggly injuries that could keep a couple of players out for six weeks,” Kirwan said.

“Shaun Stevenson is still with the All Blacks so we might just see him. You’ve got a couple of niggly injuries where you don’t know if that person is going to go to the World Cup.

“We have to see people. Maybe it is not this week, but when are you going to see them?”

Despite starring against the Springboks, there is still uncertainty surrounding Will Jordan as he manages his way back from migraines and vertigo symptoms.

Foster disclosed that they had deliberately rested Jordan for the All Blacks’ opening Rugby Championship game against Argentina to avoid extensive overseas travel.

With the All Blacks heading overseas to Melbourne, it remains to be seen whether they will bring him or remain cautionary.

Former All Black wing Jeff Wilson believed that the Dunedin Test has been pencilled in as the time to experiment, but only if the All Blacks get the job done this week and secure the Bledisloe Cup for another year.

“I think we see everyone in Dunedin if we win this game. We will see everybody,” he said.

“But their focus is well and truly on Melbourne.”

Another player yet to be seen is Crusaders wing Leicester Fainga’anuku, who was in devastating form during Super Rugby Pacific with 13 tries and 21 line breaks.

However the 23-year-old has already confirmed he will be departing New Zealand after he signed an 18-month deal with Toulon.

Time is running out for Fainga’anuku or Stevenson to press their World Cup claims with the two Bledisloe Tests remaining and a one-off game against the Springboks.

“If he is fit and available now, and plays the same position as Braydon Ennor, surely Leicester Fainga’anuku is the option off the bench?” Wilson asked.

“If you’ve got any faith in him as a player and trust him to turn the Super Rugby form into the black jersey, you have to see him now.

“We have to see him play this week in a pressure situation.”

What did we learn here? The ABS have pretty much secured the RC.

Why on Gods earth not let some nigglies sit this one out? They must still be rubbing there boo-boos from that last match.

Only Ben Smith would base a story on what John Kirwan thinks !

Sorry I do not see why there is a conversation about Leicester he has chosen his next move (all credit to him for making a decision that works for him) however the all blacks need to be working constantly on developing the next players and under the current local only player rules playing him would only to try not to have him play against you (sorry look at history has happened a lot with a list of 1 cap players)
As with all World Cup cycles we know players will be doing their swan song and then moving on( but in most instances they have served the jersey and the country well for years) Respect the jersey if they are not a serious contender as a squad member for at least the next 2 years (so not leaving in 4 months or just picking them to try to block them from turning out for another country) why pick them?

They'd be stupid not to which is why I think that they won't. Rest Will Jordan even if he's fine, more rest won't hurt and he'll be good to go at a moments notice. Drop Clarke now instead of waiting for the World Cup to do it, he's not a finished product and he won't be this year. Stevenson would do fine on the left wing, I don't think that anyone other than Beauden, Jordie or DMac is a suitable option for Fullback with the current strategy.

Random question, but if they have Ennor on the bench, who goes to 12 if Jordie goes down?

The world cup pre-match against the Boks is out of scope for fringe players to force their way into the squad. The squad will already have been announced.

Unless there are injuries suffered from that match, its the two Bledisloe games that count for inclusion.

It's not going to matter if they get half a game here or there, it's not enough to show their current form, the run is too late to worry about the wider squad. There's hardly enough time to settle on the few spots up for grab in the 23. The centers and 8 are the only position I can see were there could be sudden emergency's that still need accounting for.

Shooter will be playing league next season. The snub over his alleged poor defence when Clarke gets a free ride tells him all he needs to know.

‘The problem with this year’s Champions Cup? Too many English clubs’

Like I've said before about your idea (actually it might have been something to do with mine, I can't remember), I like that teams will a small sustainable league focus can gain the reward of more consistent CC involvement. I'd really like the most consistent option available.

Thing is, I think rugby can do better than footballs version. I think for instance I wanted everyone in it to think they can win it, where you're talking about the worst teams not giving up because they are so far off the pace we get really bad scoreline when that and giving up to concentrate on the league is happening together.

So I really like that you could have a way to remedy that, but personally I would want my model to not need that crutch. Some of this is the same problem that football has. I really like the landscape in both the URC and Prem, but Ireland with Leinster specifically, and France, are a problem IMO. In football this has turned CL pool stages in to simply cash cow fixtures for the also ran countries teams who just want to have a Real Madrid or ManC to lose to in their pool for that bumper revenue hit. It's always been a comp that had suffered for real interest until the knockouts as well (they might have changed it in recent years?).

You've got some great principles but I'm not sure it's going to deliver on that hard hitting impact right from the start without the best teams playing in it. I think you might need to think about the most minimal requirement/way/performance, a team needs to execute to stay in the Champions Cup as I was having some thougt about that earlier and had some theory I can't remember. First they could get entry by being a losing quarter finalist in the challenge, then putting all their eggs in the Champions pool play bucket in order to never finish last in their pool, all the while showing the same indifference to their league some show to EPCR rugby now, just to remain in champions. You extrapolate that out and is there ever likely to be more change to the champions cup that the bottom four sides rotate out each year for the 4 challenge teams? Are the leagues ever likely to have the sort of 'flux' required to see some variation? Even a good one like Englands.

I'd love to have a table at hand were you can see all the outcomes, and know how likely any of your top 12 teams are going break into Champions rubyg on th back it it are?

‘The problem with this year’s Champions Cup? Too many English clubs’

"Right, so even if they were the 4 worst teams in Champions Cup, you'd still have them back by default?"

I think (i) this would literally never happen, (ii) it technically couldn't quite happen, given at least 1 team would qualify via the challenge cup, so if the actual worst team in the CC qualified it would have to be because they did really well after being knocked down to the challenge cup.

But the 13th-15th teams could qualify and to be fair I didn't think about this as a possibility. I don't think a team should be able to qualify via the Champions Cup if they finish last in their group.

Overall though I like my idea best because my thinking is, each league should get a few qualification spots, and then the rest of the spots should go to the next best teams who have proven an ability to be competitive in the champions cup. The elite French clubs generally make up the bulk of the semi-final spots, but that doesn't (necessarily) mean that the 5th-8th best French clubs would be competitive in a slimmed down champions cup. The CC is always going to be really great competition from the semis onwards, but the issue is that there are some pretty poor showings in the earlier rounds. Reducing the number of teams would help a little bit, but we could improve things further by (i) ensuring that the on-paper "worst" teams in the competition have a track record of performing well in the CC, and (ii) by incentivising teams to prioritise the competition. Teams that have a chance to win the whole thing will always be incentivised to do that, but my system would incentivise teams with no chance of making the final to at least try to win a few group stage matches.

Its christmas time; there's no need to be afraid!
