What Dylan Hartley believes England must do about Owen Farrell

Dylan Hartley has urged England to install Owen Farrell at fly-half for the entire World Cup and its build-up in the belief it will provide reassurance to the team. Farrell is competing with George Ford and Marcus Smith for the role of chief conductor with the alternative option to pick him at inside centre, operating alongside one of his rivals for the No10 jersey.

Head coach Steve Borthwick used both Farrell and Smith in the position during the Guinness Six Nations, while Ford is back in contention having fallen out of favour under Eddie Jones.

Hartley, who led England to the 2016 Grand Slam, insisted that his successor as captain should start the Summer Nations Series opener against Wales on Saturday and then be retained to send out a message.

    The Bunker explained in rugby

“I would love for Owen to play at 10 and for Steve Borthwick to make his mind up and go with him for all these opening games,” Hartley said.

“The team ticks when there is certainty and I love the conviction of seeing Owen at 10. If he is at 10 then it frees up Ollie Lawrence or Manu Tuilagi, or whatever combination there is outside him.

“As the leader, heartbeat of the side and world-class player when given the reins, Owen is integral to how England will perform. He is not just the fly-half and goalkicker, he is everything to that squad. He’s not a young kid anymore, he is a battle-hardened warrior.

“He is still matching where he needs to be physically. It’s not like they are carrying him just for his experience whereas you would probably argue I was just there for experience and captaincy instead of performance. In that regard, you hit a tipping point and my tipping point came pre-30 years old. Owen ticks all the boxes for me.”

Borthwick has four Tests – Wales’ visit to Twickenham and clashes with Ireland and Fiji complete the schedule – to fine-tune England ahead of their seismic opener against Argentina on September 9.

The Principality showdown is the only match to take place before Borthwick names his 33-man World Cup squad on Monday with the management team holding their final selection meeting on Saturday night.

Hartley, who is now exploring coaching consultancy roles, having retired in 2019, believes it is crucial England use the Tests to stitch together a winning run.

“You want to roll these games into the World Cup and win them all. You don’t want to experiment and I would like to see conviction from the off. Don’t mess around and pick the team you would for a World Cup final,” the former Northampton hooker said.

“Pick a team against Wales to win, not to work on combinations. If you experiment with a player you might learn more about him, but you get more from a winning team. You go through the gears easier when you are winning.

“Uncertainty can keep environments competitive and honest, but you also need a little bit of comfort. Injuries will come, but deal with those retrospectively and go win the games which will build momentum and confidence.”

Rugby is going through a challenging period amid concerns over concussion, its laws, finances and playing numbers, but Hartley believes the coming weeks in France will provide a much-needed lift.

“The game has taken a bit of a shoeing but the best of rugby is displayed at Rugby World Cups, so it’s timely,” the 97-cap front row said. “You have the underdog stories – the teams you never get to see like Portugal and Chile – that emerge and are hugely positive.

“The game is in a tough place but with the quality of teams and calibre of athlete, we will see at the World Cup, it will be a great advertisement for the game and we can stop talking about the negative stuff.”

Also, I can’t help but smirk when pundits make claims such as “Owen is integral to how England will perform” as if Farrell will somehow propel this team to new heights. Farrell has played the majority of Englands games over the last 4 years and England have been pretty woeful in that time. So if Farrell is integral to how England perform, and England have performed badly, surely that’s a negative on Farrell.

Couldn’t disagree more. Regardless of what one thinks of Farrell (and for me, he certainly isn’t “World Class” and hasn’t made England “tick” since 2018) Borthwick needs these games to work things out. He should try different combinations and try some players out. He can use the group stages (and QF) to build momentum.

'Poor comments from me' - Watson backtracks on emotional red card outburst

My partner and I had always been cautious investors, but like many others, we fell victim to an investment scheme that promised high returns in the cryptocurrency space. The company had a sleek website, a compelling pitch, and even endorsements from supposed financial experts. It all looked legitimate—until it wasn’t. One morning, as I checked our crypto wallet, my stomach dropped. The 350 ETH we had transferred was gone. The platform was suddenly inaccessible, support emails bounced back, and the so-called “investment managers” had disappeared. Panic set in. My partner, Lisa, tried to remain calm, but I could see the worry in her eyes. This was our hard-earned savings, and we had been scammed. Determined not to give up, we scoured the internet for help. That’s when we came across Galaxy Ethical Tech—a company specializing in ethical blockchain investigations and asset recovery. Their reputation was impeccable, and they had successfully helped many people retrieve lost funds from fraudulent crypto schemes. With nothing to lose, we reached out. Galaxy Ethical Tech assigned us a dedicated blockchain forensics expert, Daniel, who listened patiently to our story. He assured us that their technology could trace our stolen Ethereum across multiple wallets, even if the scammers had tried to obscure the transactions. Using advanced blockchain analytics and AI-driven tracing, Daniel and his team mapped out the movement of our ETH. The scammers had funneled the funds through multiple wallets and mixing services, but Galaxy Ethical Tech’s algorithms identified patterns in the transactions. Within 72 hours, they pinpointed where the stolen Ethereum had been consolidated. The next step was enforcement. Galaxy Ethical Tech collaborated with cybercrime authorities and blockchain security networks to freeze the identified wallets. They also leveraged their ethical hacking team to monitor real-time movements and prevent further laundering of the funds.Within two weeks, we received an email that made our hearts race. A significant portion of our 350 ETH had been recovered! Galaxy Ethical Tech coordinated with an exchange compliance team to ensure the funds were returned to our wallet. The relief was overwhelming. We had gone from despair to gratitude, all thanks to the ethical, transparent, and highly skilled approach of Galaxy Ethical Tech. Their AI-powered forensics, legal partnerships, and ethical hacking had saved us from a devastating loss.Today, Lisa and I are more cautious than ever in the crypto space, and we actively educate others on avoiding scams. But if there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s this: when technology is used ethically, it can do wonders—even reclaim what was thought to be lost forever.Galaxy Ethical Tech didn’t just recover our Ethereum. They restored our faith in the power of ethical innovation.contact them via Email: galaxyethicaltech@mail.comWhatsapp: +15072712442Telegram: Galaxy_ethical_tech
