What Matthieu Jailbert told Henry Pollock in heated Champions Cup exchange

Matthieu Jalibert has revealed what he said in a heated on-field exchange with Northampton Saints’ Henry Pollock during Bordeaux-Bègles’ dramatic Investec Champions Cup final victory, claiming the English side had disrespected the French club in the build-up to the match.

The 26-year-old played a central role in guiding UBB to their first-ever Champions Cup trophy, playing a key part in a number of the French side’s tries and generally terrorising the Saints’ defence.

The France international fly-half was also one of a number of players seen in a fiery tête-à-tête with Pollock after the final whistle in Bordeaux’s 28–20 win at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday.

Jalibert told the BBC that comments made by Saints players in the media in the lead-up to the match had heightened tensions.

“I told him (Pollock) that he didn’t know our club,” Jalibert said. “They said some things in the press which we didn’t really appreciate.”

“They said that we were a club of mercenaries who are here for the money. I just told him that he doesn’t know our history, where we came from and that he must respect all clubs.”

The remarks refer to comments attributed to several Saints players ahead of the semi-final clash, in which there was a clear sense that the English Premiership leaders felt they were facing a side constructed through financial muscle rather than homegrown development.

Jalibert, one of several Bordeaux players to have risen through the club’s academy and an emblematic figure in their rise, took exception.

The scrap with Pollock has certainly garnered headlines following the result, with Saints clearly miffed at the England back-row being singled out by the Top 14 heavyweights.

“There was a fracas at the end, there was foul play involved,” head coach Phil Dowson said. “I have been assured that the touch judge has seen it and will deal with it appropriately.

“Henry Pollock was particularly upset by it because I think it was uncalled for and out of order. He reacted, and the officials have told me that they will deal with it.”

Teammate Fin Smith also questioned why UBB came after the confident Pollock, whose post-match celebrations have split rugby fans in recent weeks.

“They were after him (Pollock). I don’t think they liked him. He will be alright,” said Smith, who is heading to Australia with the British and Irish Lions later this summer. “I remember they (Bordeaux players) all sort of charged at him and were trying to get hold of him.

“I am surprised if you have just won a European Cup, the first thing you want to do is start a fight with a 20-year-old. I felt that was interesting.”

This happens so often to young English players - the English media build the young upcoming star up to something that person is not.

Very few young stars survive the implosion. Sad.

Just another Posh Boy who seems to need a lesson in humility. England's perennial problem.

I do not know where does this idea of needing the sport to stay relevant with an arrogant personality.

In France, the interest for rugby has raised. And it’s certainly not because of Antoine Dupont’s try celebration, nor LBB’s.

If it were the case, Yoann Huget would have been the personality that fired up this interest (spoiler alert: he did not).

French clubs and the French federation have made huge systemic changes to raise the level of the game. Again, watch today’s Eggchasers video about it.

But I guess it’s easier to think that a sole wonder kid with cocky attitude will save English rugby and possibly raise the interest around rugby in the world, instead of just working out a long-term solution like the French did.

It didn’t really work out with Marcus Smith, did it?

Even if you wanted to put forward a superstar for rugby to raise the awareness of the game, Sasha F-M has way more to propose to be that superstar, in all aspects.

And just in terms of human behavior, I don’t think boys need to have more example of disrespectful and arrogant personalities to look up to. There are enough lousy examples with tate, musk, rogan and all the children with unresolved childhood trauma.

I expect problems for him if he can’t manage better the discipline factor, either with the rules or self-discipline.

Can we dial back on the Henry Pollock headlines? Jeez , rather talk about how mediocre the “STAR” player for Saints was.

Had his two disallowed trys stood would have been a very different story. He had a decent game just wasnt as box office as he had been in other games.

In my experience, privileged people never admit when they're wrong.

That's the difference.

You get as good as you dish out. All ex players lauding him for showing his personality a bit of McGregor walk. Which the sport needs to stay rellevant. However thought he's got to be okay when he gets it shoved back in his face.

Any remarks any Saints player made were directed at Leinster not Bordeaux so this is just an excuse because they don't like Pollock, they targeted him and generally kept him quiet but for some reason winning wasn't enough for some of their players, whether you like Pollock or not he didn't cause this , it's not the first time that french players overreact to perceive disrespect if it involves the English . The bottom line is that the best french teams and Leinster have huge playing budgets compared to all the other teams in the competition, that's not a slur that's a fact and obviously it gives them a significant advantage over everyone else , Saints remarks regarding Leinster were a reaction to being written off by many in the Irish media who were very dismissive of both Northampton and the premiership as a whole. Realistically no team outside of Leinster and the top four or five in France should win the competition, nothing is impossible however unless more income is acquired by more teams then the rest are skiing uphill.

True. Saracens were the only English team to briefly dominate. What they did was financial doping in their own league.

In Europe it was a case of “go nuts”.

They swung it with the big boys though.

Leinster is constructed 95% from the academy. Pollock needs to wind his neck in

This is great! Getting some spice into future fixtures.

Not a smart move to go after a clubs history and accuse them of buying a team.

Especially when young Henry's parents bought his education for him.

Fairly brain dead to do it just after they've pumped you in a final.
