World Schools Festival Day 3 Review: Hamilton on high

Hamilton swept aside the South African side in a close encounter

The finals day of the World Schools Festival in Thailand brought an incredible standard of open, running rugby which was a testament to the exciting style of play in the schools’ game.

We will go through every game in the closing stages of the tournament.

Highlights | Grey College vs Hamilton Boys | World Schools Festival Final

Odyssey XV vs RTA – Open Tournament
Both of these invitational sides put in hugely impressive performances over the three days, with the teams sharing the spoils in a three-tie contest against both of the sides. The Fijians from Odyssey wowed the crowd at the Pattana Stadium with their mazy runs and clever handling skills, whilst the Rugby Travel Academy impressed with their powerful forward pack which has become synonymous with South African rugby.

Ultimately, Odyssey proved too good in this final match and they deservedly came out as champions in this clash.

Trinity vs RTA
Trinity went into this tournament with an incredibly difficult tie against the favourites from South Africa, Grey College. After narrowly losing that game, the competition has led them to this stage, taking on another team from the rainbow nation, who they narrowly edged.

St Michael’s vs Sedbergh – Shield Final
The premier sides in England and Ireland came to blows in the final of the shield competition. An incredible 60m kick from talented future England star Ben Redshaw helped the men in brown pull away from the Dublin side.

Result Sedbergh 27 – 19 St Michael’s

Millfield vs Cardiff and Vale College Cup 3rd/4th playoff
Cardiff repeatedly shocked and impressed rugby fans from around the world during the World Schools Festival, and today was a similar story as they went toe to toe with the top side in England in 2022. Both sides were only separated by a few points until the pressure told in the final 10 minutes as Millfield powered over in the corner. A perfectly angled kick from the touchline helped Millfield earn a last gasp victory, a common theme in this festival.

Grey College vs Hamilton Boys
The concluding match to the showpiece in Thailand was as frenetic and fast-paced as every schools rugby fan imagined it would be. There had been much build-up before the final, with many unsure on how the physical style of Grey and the open style of Hamilton would play out. The opening 30 minutes of the game proved to be as attritional as some predicted, with both sides failing to find a chink in their opponent’s armour. However, the second half was when the champions of 1st XV rugby in New Zealand showed their class as they ran in four tries against the resilient young men from Bloemfontein.

The full last five minutes were spent in the Northampton half (mostly in the 22), with very little Northampton possession, and a score deficit of 3 in favor of the Saints. And that period included two Leinster penalties.

Leinster did not do enough to ensure ball security. All three attacking opportunities (disallowed try, midfield crash ball, and final tap penalty) should have resulted in a clean ruck recycle but all ended up with losing the ball.

The opponents did some naughty things in those tackles/rucks, and the ref made some bad calls, but that’s no excuse. Leinster should have protected the ball better, should have resourced those rucks better, and should have managed the recycle better.

The last penalty move was really bad, and was really the story of the game. Firstly, it was blatantly obvious to read what they were doing, even without it being a repeat of the earlier tap fake. If you look at the defenders they were fully lined up expected that crash ball on the 15m line, got that read reinforced when the Leinster forwards moved wider from the spot, and the defense were ready with a gang tackle. The ball carrier literally had no options other than to take the tackle, and what it looked like was a planned recycle with a pass to RG Snyman off 9, followed bby a Snyman offload and a famous try by a midfielder. But instead of setting the ruck properly the ball carrier face planted.

How does that happen? You have all of the initiative. It’s 7 forwards against 8. You know where and how you are going to hit the defense. You have your support players right in behind you. The Saints played the ball illegally in the ruck (and got away with it), but they should never have had the chance to do so.

This was like match point in a tennis final, with Leinster to serve for the game. They fluffed it.

You should really read my posts and stop trying to justify why the irish keeps choking. How many times have they choked in big a game?? I am from SA….. now lets see you sing the same old tune as to how you beat us a handful of times( Irish overall record against SA is just embarrassing) and how we stole the WC and how the ref helped us…….boring. Try not to lose track of this article…. its all about how the irish can not close out big games…….hence the choking tag! Even with all the SH help the irish cant do it…… Just face it…..there is a problem acceptance is the first step :)

Ireland have won 3 grand slams since 2018. Leinster won the ERC in 2018 plus a few URCs since. Leinster have been in 16 semi finals and won 8. With 4 ERC wins. Toulouse have been in 17 semi-finals and won 6. Considering Ireland and Irish teams could count the number of wins they won in the 90s in one hand we will take that. Not enough for an arrogant guy like you too ch1cken sh1t to reveal his country I guess.

Another reason for Jordie Barrett. He has not been involved in any of those losses.

There is no scarring. He is more likely to keep his thinking cap on and not slide down the well worn mud slide to panic that Henshaw was muddied the back of his shirt/shorts with several times in recent years. NH were not going to win that match in the second half. They needed a decent lead from teh 1st half to try and hold.

Judging from a few years of poor end game match management my hunch is that sorting it out has fallen between the stools of Cullen-Nienaber and previously Cullen-Lancaster. That’s a finger pointing right at Cullen as overall manager.

The lack of big (challenging) matches could also have been mitigated by Leinster by doing a stress test on potential weaknesses. NH obviously did such a test and emerged with a bit of an array of attacking opportunities and as NB has said ways to diminish the rush D.
