Ben Tune Bio
Ben Tune is best remembered as being a key member of Australia’s Rugby World Cup winning squad of 1999 and for being one of the best finishers of his time - all despite having a career dogged by persistent knee problems.
Born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in December 1976, Ben Tune played rugby union during his education and at amateur level for GPS Rugby. He spent his professional career playing for Queensland Reds and he made his debut in the inaugural Super 12 (now Super Rugby Pacific) season back in 1996.
Ben Tune spent 11 seasons with the Reds, with his final appearance coming in 2007 in what was the Super 14. By the time he hung up his boots – and even with his injury problems – he had played over 80 games for the club, scoring an impressive 155 points and earning Super Rugby honours in the process.
At international level, Ben Tune made his test debut in 1996 playing against Wales and became a regular in the side from then on. In addition to playing in the Wallabies’ Rugby World Cup final against France in 1999, he also scored a try in the game. Another notable honour was helping Australia to a Tri-Nations (now The Rugby Championship) win in 2000.
Ben Tune’s last game for the national side was in 2002 in a test match against Argentina, bringing his total number of caps to 45 and his total number of tries to an impressive 24. Such were the quality of his performances on the world stage, he was named in the ‘Wallaby Team of the Decade’ in the right wing position.
After his retirement, Ben Tune has worked as a rugby commentator on Australian television and has been outspoken about the importance of looking after your mental health, following his own personal struggles.
