Bobby Skinstad Bio
Bobby Skinstad is a great of modern South African rugby. During his highly distinguished career, he played as an openside flanker and a number eight for several elite clubs and the Springboks. Bobby Skinstad was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Bobby Skinstad began his senior career in South Africa, where he represented a number of the country’s elite sides in both the Currie Cup and Super Rugby. During this period of his career, he won the Currie Cup three times with the Western Province (1997, 2000 and 2001) and reached the final of Super Rugby with the Sharks in 2007.
During this time, Bobby Skinstad also represented the Springboks at all levels, including the South Africa Sevens side in 1997. Later in the same year, he made his debut for the Springboks. During his Springboks career, he represented South Africa 42 times and regularly captained the side. As a South Africa player, he won both the Tri-Nations (now The Rugby Championship) in 1998 and the Rugby World Cup in 2007.
However, mid-career in 2004, Bobby Skinstad enjoyed a semi-retirement in the United Kingdom, where he largely played at an amateur level and pursued business opportunities. Although he returned to South Africa and the Springboks side in 2007, he retired later in the same year.
Since retiring from the game in 2007, Bobby Skinstad has invested in several businesses, where he now works as a partner. He’s also stayed connected to the game and often works as a pundit and analyst.
