Dan Luger Bio
Dan Luger was a talented winger who was a member of the England squad that won the 2003 Rugby World Cup. A prolific try scorer who had blistering pace, he was a favourite of fans and coaches.
Dan Luger’s domestic career began in 1993, when he made his debut for Richmond. Prior to this, he’d played for the club’s junior sides. Between then and 2003, Dan Luger played rugby union for a number of England’s elite sides. As well as stints at Richmond and Orrell, he also represented Harlequins (1996-99 and 2001-03) and Saracens (1999-2001).
Following this, Dan Luger moved to France where he represented Perpignan (2003-05), Toulon (2005-06) and Nice Côte d'Azur (2006-2010). He also enjoyed a season in Croatia, where he played for RK Nada (2006).
Dan Luger’s impact at domestic level was immediate and he made his first appearance for England’s U21s while playing for Orrell. Only a couple of years later (1998), he made his debut for the full national side. He was then a standout performer at the 1999 Rugby World Cup.
From this point in his career, he was a star of the English game. However, several injury-ravaged seasons halted his momentum. At his best though, Dan Luger was sparkling. He showed this in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, when he was an integral part of the tournament-winning side. His form also saw him called-up to represent the British and Irish Lions in 2001. Sadly though, an injury ended his tour early.
When he retired from playing, Dan Luger enjoyed a spell as the coach of Nice Côte d'Azur. However, since 2010, he has worked in financial sales, trading and hedge funds.
