Dan Vickerman Bio
Dan Vickerman was a formidable and powerful lock who was capped 63 times by Australia. Sadly, he died after committing suicide in 2017. Dan Vickerman was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Dan Vickerman was born and raised in South Africa, but began his professional rugby career with the Brumbies in 2001. However, he only played 20 games for the side before he left to represent the Waratahs, where he spent the majority of his professional career.
Between 2004 and 2008 and again in 2011, Dan Vickerman represented the Waratahs with distinction. Across his 58 games with the side, he firmly established himself as one of the finest locks in the game and became a regular for Australia, who he represented between 2002 and 2011.
Although his time in the game was often blighted by injuries, Dan Vickerman still enjoyed a highly successful playing career. In total, he represented Australia 63 times and played almost 80 games in Super Rugby.
In truth, Dan Vickerman could have played more Super Rugby and Wallabies games if he hadn’t taken a break from the game in 2008. In the autumn of that year, he left Australia and went to England, where he studied at Cambridge. During this time, he did briefly combine his studies with a season at Northampton Saints.
When he completed his degree, Dan Vickerman returned to Australia and once again represented both the Waratahs and Australia. However, a year later, a persistent injury problem forced his retirement.
Following his retirement from rugby, Dan Vickerman worked for the Rugby Union Players’ Association. However, he sadly died as a result of suicide at his home in Sydney in 2017. He was survived by his wife and two children.
