Danie Gerber Bio
Danie Gerber is a former South African international who played primarily as a centre. Thanks to his illustrious playing career, he was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Born 14 April 1958, Danie Gerber grew up playing football and cricket. However, he quickly found that he excelled at rugby, and within a few years of picking up the sport, he began to play for the South Africa Schools team.
After he left school, Danie Gerber represented a number of South Africa’s top sides. Throughout his domestic career, he played 115 games for Eastern Province, 40 for Western Province and 24 for Orange Free State.
Between 1980 and 1992, Danie Gerber also represented the Springboks. However, because South Africa were in sporting isolation due to issues surrounding apartheid at the time, he found his opportunities at international level limited. As a result, despite the fact his international career spanned over 12 years, he only played 24 times for the Springboks. During these appearances, he scored 19 tries.
Although he only made a handful of appearances on the international stage, Danie Gerber is widely regarded as one of the greatest centres to ever play the game. As a result, he’s been named as South Africa’s greatest ever centre and has been named in a number of ‘all time XVs’.
After he retired from the game, Danie Gerber held a few high profile coaching positions. However, he has largely stayed away from the game and has instead worked in the fashion industry and as an ambassador for heart disease awareness.
