De Wet Barry Bio
De Wet Barry is a retired South African rugby union player who represented the Springboks at international level. He was famed for his strength and aggressive style of defensive play as a tough centre.
Born in Ceres, Western Cape, South Africa in June 1978, De Wet Barry played for a number of clubs both in his native South Africa and England. He began his career with Western Province in 1997 and he played with the side in the Currie Cup. He also played for the Stormers in what was the Super 12 (now Super Rugby Pacific). Collectively he made over 150 appearances for these teams, with Currie Cup wins in 2000 and 2001. Barry was also named captain of Stormers in 2006.
In 2007 he left these sides to join up with Harlequins where he played Premiership Rugby for two seasons. In July 2009 he then returned to South Africa and joined what was Eastern Province Kings to again play in the Currie Cup. De Wet Barry remained with the side for another two seasons before retiring from playing in January 2012 to take up a coaching role at the club, a position he held until late 2013.
De Wet Barry’s international debut came in 2000 against Canada and he became a key member of the Springbok’s squad, going on to make 39 appearances for the side and scoring three tries. He played in the Rugby World Cup of 2003 and was instrumental in South Africa’s Tri-Nations (now The Rugby Championship) tournament win in 2004. De Wet Barry’s final game for the Springboks came in 2006. Today, De Wet Barry is the owner of a number of manufacturing companies in South Africa.
