Denis Hickie Bio
Known by rugby fans around the world as ‘Disco Denis’ due to his quick feet, Denis Hickie is a former Ireland international who played his club rugby for Leinster. Until 2008, he held the Irish try-scoring record.
Born 13 February 1976, Denis Hickie was educated at St Mary’s College. During this time, he led the school to the Leinster Schools Senior Cup title in 1994.
After attending University College Dublin, Denis Hickie made his professional debut for Leinster. He then stayed with the Irish province for the entirety of his career. Between 1996 and 2007, he made 129 appearances for the first XV, scoring more than 300 points in the process. In 2002, he also helped the team capture the PRO12 title (which is now known as the United Rugby Championship).
As well as being a legend of Leinster rugby, Denis Hickie was also known for his Ireland career. Between 1997 and 2007, he made more than 60 appearances for his country, including several Rugby World Cup appearances. He was also called into the British and Irish Lions squad for their tour of New Zealand in 2005.
Although he enjoyed a remarkably successful career, Denis Hickie suffered from a number of injuries during his playing days, including a ruptured Achilles tendon and a dislocated right fibula. However, he never lost any pace and remained known for his dancing feet and his try-scoring prowess. As a result, until 2008, he was Ireland’s record try-scorer.
Denis Hickie retired from rugby after Ireland’s exit from the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Today, he works in the manufacturing sector as a general manager.
