Dwayne Peel Bio
Dwayne Peel was a legend of Welsh rugby who was also one of the country’s most-capped scrum-halves. He’s currently a coach for the Cardiff Blues.
Born 31 August 1981, Dwayne Peel joined Tumble RFC at under-8s level. After an impressive junior career, he then began his professional career in 2000, when he joined Llanelli. In 2003, when the structure of Welsh rugby changed, he then joined the Llanelli Scarlets region, where he stayed until 2008.
Following almost a decade in Welsh professional rugby, Dwayne Peel left the Scarlets in 2008 and joined Sale Sharks. Between then and 2014, he made 123 appearances for the side. Following this, he joined Bristol, where he stayed until his retirement in 2016.
Although he enjoyed a distinguished career at the domestic level in England and Wales, Dwayne Peel is best known for his appearances for Wales. Between 2001 and 2011, he was capped an impressive 76 times by his country. At the time of his retirement, this made him the most capped scrum-half in the history of the Welsh national rugby team. Sadly though, this record was overtaken by Mike Phillips in 2013.
In addition to this, due to his stellar performances for Wales and Llanelli, Dwayne Peel was selected for the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 2005. On the tour, he played in all three test matches.
After his retirement in 2016, Dwayne Peel immediately moved into coaching. Upon the completion of his playing contract with Bristol, he became a backs and skills coach with the club. Then, in 2017, he moved to Ulster and became an assistant coach. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Dwayne Peel has been the senior assistant coach responsible for attack at the Cardiff Blues.
