Greg Somerville Bio
Greg Somerville is a former prop who was capped more than 60 times by the All Blacks. At the domestic level, he played for a number of the world’s top sides, including Gloucester, Canterbury, the Crusaders and the Melbourne Rebels.
Born 28 November 1977, Greg Somerville began his rugby-playing career with Canterbury in 1998. Immediately, he was recognised as a top talent. As a result, only a year later, he was called up to represent the Crusaders in Super Rugby.
Over the course of the next decade, Greg Somerville continued to represent both sides with distinction, amassing more than 50 appearances for Canterbury and more than 100 appearances for the Crusaders. During this period, he also won the Super Rugby title on six occasions.
However, at the end of the 2008 season, Greg Somerville decided to leave New Zealand. As a result, he signed for Gloucester in the English Premiership. Following a successful two-and-a-half-year stint in England, he then left Gloucester and moved to Australia. At the conclusion of the 2011 Super Rugby season, he hung up his boots after spending a year with the Melbourne Rebels.
Although he enjoyed a glittering domestic career, Greg Somerville is undoubtedly best known for his career as an All Black. Between 2000 and 2008, he was capped 66 times by his country. During this time, he played in more than 40 test matches before he scored his first points for the side.
Since retiring from the game, Greg Somerville has worked in the agriculture industry. He’s also worked sporadically as a scrum coach.
