Ieuan Evans Bio
Ieuan Evans is a former winger who was a prolific try scorer for Wales and the British and Irish Lions in the 1980s and 90s. He also previously held the record for most caps for Wales as captain. Ieuan Evans was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Born 21 March 1964, Ieuan Evans began playing rugby at the age of 10 while he was a student at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen. At the age of 17, he then joined the Carmarthen Quins RFC youth side before he signed for Llanelli.
Ieuan Evans then enjoyed a highly successful career with Llanelli. During his time with the side, they won five out of seven finals. However, despite enjoying a period of success with the club, he left and signed for Bath in 1997. A year later, he was a member of the Bath side that won the 1998 Heineken Champions Cup final.
Although he was incredibly successful for Llanelli and Bath, Ieuan Evans saved his best performances for the international stage. Between 1987 and 1998, he was capped 72 times by Wales, including 28 appearances as captain. In 1994, he captained Wales as they won the Five Nations Championship.
Due to his successes for Wales over the years, Ieuan Evans was also selected for three British and Irish Lions tours between 1989 and 1997. On the 1989 tour of Australia, he scored the decisive and series-winning try in the third test. Four years later, he ran in four tries against the All Blacks.
Since retiring from the game in 1998, Ieuan Evans has been a regular on British television, where he has worked as a broadcaster, presenter and pundit. He’s also noted for his charity work and has been inducted into both the International Rugby Hall of Fame and the IRB Hall of Fame.
