Jason Robinson Bio
As a former dual-code international, Jason Robinson is a legend of English rugby. Playing as a winger or a fullback, he was capped more than 50 times by the England rugby union side. Jason Robinson was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Born 30 July 1974, Jason Robinson grew up playing rugby league. In 1991, he signed his first professional contract with Wigan, who he went on to represent until 2000. During this period, he made more than 300 appearances for the club, scoring 685 points in the process. He also made 12 appearances for Great Britain, seven for England and four for the Rest of the World. In addition, he also made a few appearances for Bath during the rugby league off-season in 1996.
In 2000, Jason Robinson switched codes and signed for Sale Sharks. He immediately made an impact for the side and, in the 2005-06 season, he became the first person to win both the Premiership and the Super League. Between 2000 and 2007, he made 159 appearances for Sale, scoring almost 250 points.
Unsurprisingly, Jason Robinson also quickly caught the attention of the England setup and he made his debut for the national rugby union side in 2001. At the time of his debut, he was only the second man to play rugby union for England after first playing rugby league for Great Britain.
During his international career, Jason Robinson was a near ever present for the side and he was integral to the team’s 2003 Rugby World Cup victory. During the tournament, he played in all seven of England’s games and he scored a try in the final. Due to his excellent performances for England throughout his career, he was also selected on two British and Irish Lions tours, where he was capped five times.
Following a brief retirement from international rugby in 2005, Jason Robinson returned to the side in 2007. However, at the end of the domestic season and the 2007 Rugby World Cup, he retired from both domestic and international rugby. That said, he did come out of retirement briefly in 2010, when he appeared for Fylde in National League 2 North. He then announced his final retirement in July 2011.
Since retirement, Jason Robinson has remained involved in both codes. He’s worked as a coach and recently joined Sale as a non-executive director. He’s also taken on the role of joint operations manager for the Jamaica national team and runs programmes in schools and with businesses.
