Joel Stransky Bio
Joel Stransky is a legend of South African rugby who is best known for his performance for the Springboks in the final of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where he scored all of South Africa’s points in their victory over New Zealand. Joel Stransky was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Throughout his domestic career, Joel Stransky represented a number of top sides in South Africa, Italy and England. He experienced success in the Currie Cup with Natal in 1990, before embarking on a career in Italy where he represented both L'Aquila and San Dona before he returned to South Africa and Natal.
However, after spells with Natal and the Western Province, Joel Stransky once again left South Africa and signed for Leicester Tigers, where he won both the Pilkington Cup and the Premiership.
Between 1993 and 1996, Joel Stransky was capped by South Africa 22 times. During this period, he guided his side to the Rugby World Cup in 1995. During his time at Leicester, it was rumoured that he may be asked to represent England in the 1999 edition of the tournament. However, it was later discovered that qualification rules made this impossible and he retired.
After his retirement from the game, Joel Stransky began a career in coaching. However, after a legal battle with Bristol over a withdrawn coaching offer, he returned to South Africa and pursued a number of business interests. Thankfully, he still remains attached to the game and works for the media in South Africa on a part-time basis.
