As a former captain of both Australia and the Western Force, Nathan Sharpe is undoubtedly a giant of the game. In total, during his distinguished career, he was capped by his country 116 times. Nathan Sharpe was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Born 26 February 1978, Nathan Sharpe began playing rugby at the age of 11. Although his first love was Australian Rules football, he clearly excelled at rugby and he was called into the Australian U19 and U21 teams. In 1999, he was even named as the captain of the Australian U21s.
At the age of only 18, Nathan Sharpe was also selected to represent the Queensland Reds in Super Rugby in 1996. However, he had to wait until 1998 before he made his debut. He then stayed with the Reds until 2005, making 70 appearances for the side in the process.
However, when the Super Rugby competition expanded in 2006, Nathan Sharpe was named as the inaugural team captain of the Western Force, where he stayed until his retirement in 2012. In total, he represented the Western Force 92 times and played more than 150 games in Super Rugby.
Despite his stellar Super Rugby career, Nathan Sharpe is undoubtedly best known for his appearances on the international stage. Between 2002 and 2012, he was capped by his country an impressive 116 times and he captained the side on 20 occasions. During his stellar international career, he won the John Eales Medal twice.
After retiring from rugby in 2012, Nathan Sharpe has stayed involved in the game. He currently works as a commentator for Australia games and works for a labour hire company.
