Ollie le Roux Bio
Ollie le Roux may be best remembered by many for his sizeable frame and stature, but it’s fair to say he was a giant on the pitch in terms of his excellent work rate and skilful style of play for both club and country.
Born in Fort Beaufort, South Africa in May 1973, Ollie le Roux began his professional rugby union career in 1993 as a prop playing for Free State Cheetahs. After a season with the side, he moved on to Sharks where he would spend a large portion of his career playing in both the Currie Cup and in what was the Celtic League.
Despite being a firm fan favourite, Ollie le Roux left Sharks in 2003, and after a brief spell at Cats, returned to Free State Cheetahs and again played in the Currie Cup for two seasons. He then signed for Leinster in 2007 and ended his career in 2009 having played over 300 senior games and winning three major trophies in the process.
Ollie le Roux’s form as a youngster for Free State was enough to get him on the radar of the national side and in 1994 he made his debut for the Springboks against England. At this time this made him the youngest ever prop forward to play for South Africa.
His international career lasted for eight years, and in this time, Ollie le Roux earned over 50 caps and was a key part of the side’s Tri Nations (now The Rugby Championship) tournament win in 1998. He made his final appearance for South Africa in 2002.
Since his retirement, Ollie le Roux has set up and now runs a chicken farm with his family in Bloemfontein.
