Percy Montgomery Bio
During his playing days, Percy Montgomery was one of South Africa’s biggest stars. By the time he made his final appearance for the Springboks in 2008, he held the all-time records for both caps and points scored for South Africa. Percy Montgomery was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Percy Montgomery made his debut for the Western Province in the Currie Cup in 1996. In the same year, he made his debut for the Stormers in Super Rugby. However, he left both of these sides in 2002 and moved to Wales in order to pursue a career in the northern hemisphere. During this time, he represented Newport (2002-05), the Dragons (2003-05) and Perpignan (2007-08).
Following his stint in the northern hemisphere, Percy Montgomery returned to the Western Province and the Stormers before he ended his career. Prior to this, he’d also enjoyed a brief stint with the Sharks in Super Rugby and the Currie Cup.
Percy Montgomery made his debut for South Africa in 1997 against the British and Irish Lions. He almost immediately became a mainstay of the side and he amassed 50 caps by the end of 2001. Sadly, at this point, his career with the Springboks stalled because people playing in Wales were ineligible for national selection. Thankfully, the rules changed and he was recalled in 2004.
Between 2004 and 2008, Percy Montgomery continued to break records. Throughout his international career, he was capped a record 102 times by the Springboks, scoring 893 points. During this time, he became the side’s record point scorer and appearance maker.
In 2008, Percy Montgomery announced his retirement from international rugby. A year later, he re-joined the Springboks as a coach and announced his retirement as a player in the process. Since his retirement in 2009, Percy Montgomery has been heavily involved in charity work. He also works in the tourism industry.
