Phil Vickery Bio
Known as the ‘raging bull’, Phil Vickery was a giant of English rugby who played in three Rugby World Cups and captained his side at the 2007 tournament. During his long and illustrious career, he also made almost 150 appearances for Gloucester, more than 50 appearances for Wasps and went on two tours with the British and Irish Lions.
Born 14 March 1976, Phil Vickery started playing rugby at the age of 12. By 16, he’d already made his first appearance for an England representative team. In 1995, he was then persuaded to join Gloucester. During his time with the club, he enjoyed a period of sustained success and became known as one of the greatest props in the game.
In 2006, after making 145 appearances for Gloucester, Phil Vickery announced he was leaving for London Wasps. Between then and 2010, he helped the side capture both the Heineken Champions Cup and the Premiership.
Despite his illustrious domestic career, Phil Vickery is best known for his performances for England between 1998 and 2010. In this time, he appeared in three Rugby World Cups. He won the competition in 2003 and captained the side in 2007.
Due to his successes for England over the years, Phil Vickery was also selected for the British and Irish Lions squads in 2001 and 2009. On these tours, he was capped on five occasions.
Sadly, in 2010, Phil Vickery was forced to retire from rugby after suffering from several neck injuries. After a brief stint coaching with Worcester Warriors, he now works as a pundit and runs a clothing company.
