Richard Loe Bio
Richard Loe is a former All Black and current broadcaster who is one of the finest props to ever play the game. Although he received several bans for foul play during his career, his tough and relentless style of play was widely respected and hugely successful. He was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Born 6 April 1960, Richard Loe was a product of Christchurch Boys’ High School. During this time, he also represented a number of age-grade Canterbury sides. He then began his senior career with Canterbury in 1980, but he only played for the team for one season before he moved to Marlborough (1982-1984) and Waikato (1985-1994). Following this, he enjoyed a further season with Canterbury.
As well as representing a number of New Zealand’s provincial/state sides, Richard Loe also played for RC Vichy from 1990 to 1992. Then, at the end of his career, he enjoyed two seasons in Super Rugby with the Crusaders (1996) and the Chiefs (1997).
Although he enjoyed an excellent domestic career, Richard Loe is undoubtedly best known for his 49 All Blacks test appearances between 1987 and 1995. In addition to this, he also represented New Zealand a further 29 times in non-test games. Of these non-test appearances, three came as the captain of the side.
After finishing his playing career in 1997, Richard Loe retired to his dairy farm. He then also became a sports columnist and broadcaster in New Zealand, regularly working as a touchline commentator and radio pundit.
