Ricky Januarie is a former Springboks scrum half who represented some of the world’s top sides during his long and distinguished career. As well as gaining almost 50 caps for South Africa between 2005 and 2010, he also enjoyed productive spells with domestic sides from both France and South Africa.
Born in Hopefield, South Africa on 2 January 1982, Ricky Januarie was a star of his high school rugby team. After spending the first season of his professional career with the Boland Cavaliers, he moved to represent the Golden Lions in 2003.
Between 2003 and 2006, Ricky Januarie made regular appearances for both the Golden Lions in the Currie Cup and the Cats in Super Rugby. Following this, he enjoyed a year with the Lions in 2007.
In 2008, Ricky Januarie then moved again. This time, he made the switch to represent the Western Province in the Currie Cup and the Stormers in Super Rugby. However, after three years with both sides, he decided to leave South African rugby entirely.
While he played his domestic rugby in South Africa, Ricky Januarie was a regular for the Springboks. Between 2005 and 2010, he was capped 47 times by his country. During this period, he was a member of the South Africa squad that captured the 2007 Rugby World Cup and he scored a match-winning try against the All Blacks in 2008.
After leaving South Africa, Ricky Januarie moved to France. Between 2011 and 2019, he represented Lyon, La Rochelle and Agen. He retired from all forms of rugby in 2019.
