Shane Horgan Bio
Shane Horgan was a prolific try scorer who was a giant for Leinster and Ireland. In his long and distinguished career, he won almost every trophy the game had to offer. Shane Horgan was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Shane Horgan began playing rugby at a young age and signed for Lansdowne immediately after leaving school in 1997. Only a year later, he made his debut for Leinster.
Over the course of the next decade, Shane Horgan became a club legend for Leinster. Between 1998 and 2011, he made more than 200 appearances for the side, including a whopping 87 appearances in the Heineken Champions Cup. Throughout his period with the club, he won the Celtic League (now the United Rugby Championship) twice and the Heineken Champions Cup twice.
Thanks to his performances for Leinster, Shane Horgan was capped by Ireland for the first time in 2000. Between then and 2009, he made 65 appearances for the side and helped them capture the Six Nations Championship. At the peak of his career in the mid-2000s, he was also considered to be a national hero.
Due to his impressive performances for Ireland, Shane Horgan was also called into the British and Irish Lions squad for the 2005 tour of New Zealand. On the tour, he was a replacement in all three tests as the Lions lost 3-0.
Sadly, in 2012, Shane Horgan was forced to announce his retirement from the game with immediate effect because he was unable to regain full fitness following surgery on a long-term knee injury. Since retiring from the game, he has qualified as a lawyer and works as a speaker.
