Simon Geoghegan Bio
Simon Geoghegan is a former winger who was known for his pace and quick feet. Despite being born in England, he was capped 37 times by Ireland during his distinguished career. Simon Geoghegan was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Born in Knebworth, Hertfordshire on 1 September 1968, Simon Geoghegan played his rugby in the sport’s amateur era. As a result, while playing rugby, he also worked as a solicitor.
An adept side stepper with pace to burn, Simon Geoghegan was an electric winger who represented a number of the world’s top teams, such as London Irish and Bath. Sadly, his career in the sport was brought to a close prematurely due to a debilitating toe injury.
Although he was born in England, Simon Geoghegan qualified to play for Ireland through his Galway-born father. As a result, he chose to play international rugby for Ireland and was hugely successful. He’s perhaps best known for his try in the 1994 Five Nations (now the Six Nations Championship) match against England. During the match, he played a crucial role as Ireland emerged 13-12 victors. He also had the honour of representing his country in two Rugby World Cups (1991 and 1995).
Sadly though, despite his instrumental performances for Ireland, Simon Geoghegan never featured for the British and Irish Lions. The decision to leave him out of the 1993 tour to New Zealand was highly controversial, and his toe injury proved too substantial for him to make the 1997 tour of South Africa.
Since retiring from the game, Simon Geoghegan has continued to work as a solicitor and he now has a career as a real estate and finance partner at a London law firm.
