Stefan Terblanche Bio
Stefan Terblanche is a former South African rugby player who played as a winger, centre and fullback in his distinguished career. During his playing days, he was capped 37 times by South Africa and also made appearances for the Sharks, Ospreys and Ulster.
Born 2 July 1975, Stefan Terblanche started his career with the Boland Cavaliers, where he initially progressed through the youth system before making 66 appearances for the senior side. However, throughout a lengthy and successful career, he also represented the Sharks in both the Currie Cup and Super Rugby, Ospreys and Ulster.
During his domestic career, Stefan Terblanche gained a reputation as a fantastic finisher. To this day, he still holds the Boland Cavaliers record for the most tries scored in a single season (20) and the Boland Cavaliers record for career tries (49).
On top of this, as well as being highly successful on an individual level, Stefan Terblanche also experienced a great deal of success with the teams he represented. He won the Currie Cup with the Sharks twice in 2008 and 2010, with the latter of these successes coming when he was captain of the side. In addition, he also won the Celtic League (now the United Rugby Championship) with Ospreys. Plus, although he only signed for Ulster as a short-term injury replacement, he made a major contribution as the team reached the final of the Heineken Champions Cup in the 2011-12 season.
Although he was highly successful at the domestic level, Stefan Terblanche is arguably best known for his international career. Between 1998 and 2003, he was capped 37 times by the Springboks and he made appearances in two Rugby World Cup squads. During his international career, he also won the Tri Nations (now The Rugby Championship) in 1998 and finished his international career with a better test-try-per-match ratio than Springboks greats Carel du Plessis and Jean de Villiers.
Since retiring from rugby, Stefan Terblanche has been heavily involved in the SA Rugby Legends Association. However, he stood down as the organisation’s chief executive in 2020.
