Victor Costello Bio
Victor Costello is a retired number eight and flanker who was also an Olympic shot putter.
Born 23 October 1970, Victor Costello is a former five-time Irish shot put champion. At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, he finished in 22nd place.
However, although Victor Costello was an incredibly talented shot putter, his true passion was rugby. As a result, throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he represented a couple of Ireland’s provinces and the Irish national team. In this respect, he firmly followed in the footsteps of his father, who was also a shot putter who played in the second row for Ireland.
In 1993, after his Olympic exploits, Victor Costello signed to represent Connacht. Following this, he experienced a great deal of success in the game. Although he enjoyed a couple of seasons with Connacht and one season with London Irish, Victor Costello played his best rugby with Leinster. In total, he was capped an impressive 126 times by the Irish province over the course of a decade between 1995 and 2005.
In addition to his stellar domestic career, Victor Costello was also capped 39 times by Ireland between 1996 and 2004. During this time, he was a member of Ireland’s 2003 Rugby World Cup squad. Prior to this, he’d also represented his country at Schools, U21 and Ireland ‘A’ level.
Since retiring from rugby, Victor Costello has worked as a commercial airline pilot. He’s also provided TV and radio analysis in Ireland.
