Rugby Sevens Olympics History

Rugby union, with 15 players per side, was introduced to the Olympics in 1900. The hosts, France, claimed rugby’s first gold medal while Germany sealed silver and Great Britain took bronze. After a successful debut, rugby was also contested at the 1908, 1920 and 1924 Olympics.

Following a 92-year hiatus, rugby returned to the Olympic stage at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The sport was reinstated as rugby sevens, featuring squads of no more than 12 players. The first winners were Fiji and the team successfully defended their title and secured a second gold in 2020.
