2017 Six Nations Stats: Who Won the Six Nations 2017?

Six Nations 2017 Winner: England

The 2017 Six Nations Championship started on 4 February and Super Saturday was held on 18 March 2017. It was the 123rd Championship – the first edition was held in 1883 – and the 18th annual Six Nations. It was also the last RBS 6 Nations; Natwest sponsored the competition in 2018.

Defending champions England celebrated their 28th outright title. Although they were crowned as the winners, this was a bittersweet moment for England, as they were denied the Grand Slam by Ireland in their final fixture.

England’s win aside, nine players topped the tournament’s stats. Camille Lopez’s 67 points made him the top point scorer of the Six Nations in 2017, while Stuart Hogg was the Player of the Tournament. Additionally, a record eight players shared the title of top try scorer: Danny Care, Keith Earls, Craig Gilroy, Stuart Hogg, Jonathan Joseph, George North, CJ Stander and Liam Williams.

The 2017 Six Nations was also the first edition that used the rugby union bonus point system. Teams earned one bonus point for scoring four or more tries or for losing by seven or fewer points.

Round One Review

Match one: Scotland 27-22 Ireland (Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh)
Match two: England 19-16 France (Twickenham Stadium, London)
Match three: Italy 7-33 Wales (Stadio Olimpico, Rome)

Scotland stole the bragging rights in the first match of the 2017 Six Nations. The Scots not only triumphed at home, they also won their first Six Nations opening match since 2006. In contrast, Ireland suffered their first opening match loss since the 2012 tournament. Additionally, they also received the first losing bonus point in Six Nations history.

The second match was a hotly contested affair between England and France. Although Les Bleus edged ahead, a resurgent England secured a 19-16 victory and marked their 15th successive win.

The final match of round one saw a confident Welsh side sail past Italy 33-7.

Round Two Review

Match one: Italy 10-63 Ireland (Stadio Olimpico, Rome)
Match two: Wales 16-21 England (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff)
Match three: France 22-16 Scotland (Stade de France, Saint-Denis)

Round two kicked off with Ireland trouncing Italy 63-10. Hat tricks from CJ Stander and Craig Gilroy, as well as a brace from Keith Earls, saw the emerald squad overpower the Azzurri. With a total of nine tries, Ireland became the first team to win the Six Nations try-scoring bonus point.

In match two, the defending champions stole the win from Wales. After leading until the 70th minute, Wales faltered and a resurgent England slotted 10 unanswered points in quick succession to claim victory.

Next, Scotland fell to France. After a strong first half, Scotland’s defence collapsed during the second half. Camille Lopez scored two penalties during the last 10 minutes and sealed France’s win.

Round Three Review

Match one: Scotland 29-13 Wales (Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh)
Match two: Ireland 19-9 France (Aviva Stadium, Dublin)
Match three: England 36-15 Italy (Twickenham Stadium, London)

Round three of the rugby 2017 Six Nations was a triumph for Scotland. After losing nine consecutive matches against Wales, Scotland ended their record losing streak with their first win since 2007. As a result, Scotland rose from seventh to fifth in the World Rugby Rankings – their highest of all time.

Following this, Ireland celebrated a home win against France. Steered by a flawless Johnny Sexton, the imperious Irish side beat France 19-9.

The match between England and Italy almost provided us with the greatest upset of the tournament. The Azzurri led until the final 10 minutes, when England scored 19 points without reply. This was also a controversial match for Italy, which saw the Azzurri utilise a loophole to avoid commiting players to rucks – World Rugby quickly amended the rules.

Round Four Review

Match one: Wales 22-9 Ireland (Millennium Stadium, Cardiff)
Match two: Italy 18-40 France (Stadio Olimpico, Rome)
Match three: England 61-21 Scotland (Twickenham Stadium, London)

In round four, Wales won their second (and last) game of the 2017 Six Nations. With a brace from George North and a last-gasp try from Jamie Robert, Wales enjoyed a 22-9 home victory over Ireland.

Next, France handed Italy their 12th wooden spoon. Although Italy secured an 80th-minute try and conversion, it was too little too late and they fell to France 40-18.

In the last match of the round, England secured their 28th outright Championship title. They beat Scotland 61-21 and claimed their second consecutive win. This was a record-setting victory for England: this was their 11th successive Six Nations win and they equalled New Zealand’s record of 18 consecutive test wins.

Round Five Review

Match one: Scotland 29-0 Italy (Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh)
Match two: France 20-18 Wales (Stade de France, Saint-Denis)
Match three: Ireland 13-9 England (Aviva Stadium, Dublin)

The 2017 Six Nations Super Saturday started with Scotland’s 29-0 annihilation of Italy. Not only was this Scotland’s first clean sheet against Italy, it was also their first scoreless win in Six Nations history.

France and Wales produced one of the longest rugby matches of all time, with an additional 20 minutes of frenzied gameplay. With 99 minutes and 55 seconds on the clock, Damien Chouly soared over the line. Disbelieving Welsh fans watched as a conversion from Camille Lopez secured France’s 100th minute win.

Lastly, England were denied the Grand Slam by Ireland. Playing with near-perfect form, the Irish side ended England’s record winning streak and reclaimed the Millennium Trophy.

As the Six Nations winners of 2017, England successfully retained their title. It was also the second year in a row that England won the tournament during the fourth round. Although they took the Championship, their Super Saturday defeat against Ireland deprived England of the Grand Slam and the Triple Crown.

Scotland orchestrated their most successful tournament since 2006 and finished fourth. It was also an excellent tournament for France, who finished inside the top three for the first time since 2011. At the other end of the table, Wales endured their lowest finish since 2007.
