Six Nations: What is the Cuttitta Cup?

If you’re an Italian or a Scottish rugby fan, then you probably know all about the Cuttitta Cup. However, as it’s the newest rivalry trophy at the Six Nations, you might also have questions about this piece of silverware.

Whether you want to know who designed the trophy or when it was introduced, our rugby gurus have put together this guide to answer all of your questions. Here’s the lowdown on the Six Nations Cuttitta Cup.

Which Six Nations teams compete to win the Cuttitta Cup?

Italy and Scotland compete to win this piece of silverware. The Cuttitta Cup match takes place at the annual Six Nations tournament and the winner of the game lifts the trophy.

As the newest addition to the Six Nations trophy cabinet, the introduction of the Cuttitta Cup was a major milestone for Scotland. After all, they’re now the only Six Nations team that competes for a trophy during every match of the tournament.

Scotland also plays for four other rivalry trophies: the Auld Alliance Trophy, the Calcutta Cup, the Centenary Quaich and the Doddie Weir Cup.

When was the Cuttitta Cup introduced?

The Cuttitta Cup was introduced during the 2022 Six Nations. Scotland won the inaugural Cuttitta Cup match on 12 March 2022, when they beat Italy 33-22 at the Stadio Olimpico.

What is the meaning of the Cuttitta Cup?

The Cuttitta Cup was designed in memory of the former Italian captain, Massimo Cuttitta, who also worked as a scrum coach for Scotland. He enjoyed a phenomenal career with the Azzurri, which included winning Italy’s debut Six Nations match: their 34-20 victory against Scotland. In total, Cuttitta earned 69 caps – 22 of which were as team captain.

Sadly, Cuttitta contracted Covid-19 and passed away in 2021. The Cuttitta Cup was created to commemorate his life and career, and the first trophy was presented by his two brothers: Marcello and Michele Cuttitta.

Who designed the Cuttitta Cup?

The Cuttitta Cup was designed by the luxury Edinburgh-based jewellery maker, Hamilton & Inches. Made from solid silver, the handles of the trophy represent two props.

Which team has won the most Cuttitta Cup matches?

Scotland have won the most Cuttitta Cup matches. They won the inaugural trophy in 2022 and repeated this feat at the 2023 Six Nations Championship. To date, Italy are yet to lift this trophy.
