What is the Doddie Weir Cup?
The Doddie Weir Cup is one of the rivalry trophies that teams compete for at the Six Nations Championship. Named after Doddie Weir, this trophy is contested by Scotland and Wales.
Who was Doddie Weir and what is the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation?
George Wilson Weir, better known as Doddie Weir, was a formidable Scottish lock. He earned 61 caps for Scotland between 1990 and 2000. This included several appearances at the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where he memorably scored a brace during Scotland’s quarter-final against New Zealand.
After a successful playing career, Weir was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2016. One year later, the ‘My Name’5 Doddie Foundation’ was created. Named after Weir’s number 5 shirt, the charity helps to support research and fund treatments for MND.
Sadly, Weir passed away from the disease in 2022. His legacy lives on, however, through the trophy and the foundation.
When was the first Doddie Weir Cup awarded?
The inaugural trophy was won by Wales, who beat Scotland 21-10 at the Principality Stadium, Cardiff. Unlike future matches, this game wasn’t held during the Six Nations. Instead, it was contested during the Autumn Internationals.
Who designed the Doddie Weir Cup?
Hamilton & Inches, the renowned silversmiths and trophy makers, designed and created the Doddie Weir Cup. This silver trophy was commissioned by the Scottish Rugby Union and the Welsh Rugby Union.
As one of the tournament’s most distinctive designs, the Doddie Weir Cup is decorated with Doddie’5 Tartan. This tartan was created to raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.
