About Forsyth Barr Stadium
Opened in 2011, Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin is one of New Zealand’s premier rugby venues. It’s the home of Otago in the Bunnings NPC, the Highlanders in Super Rugby and hosted four games at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, as well as occasional All Blacks tests. Forsyth Barr Stadium was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Built at a cost of around NZ$200 million, Forsyth Barr Stadium is a state-of-the-art arena that’s known locally as ‘The Glasshouse’. Designed as a multi-purpose venue, it is undoubtedly best known as a rugby stadium, but it has also played host to football matches, rugby league matches, rodeos and concerts from Elton John, Neil Diamond and Ed Sheeran.
Notably, Forsyth Barr Stadium served as one of the venues for the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup, and it will be a venue for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Similarly, the stadium has also hosted several rugby league matches, including a fixture between New Zealand and England in 2014.
However, Forsyth Barr Stadium is primarily a rugby stadium and it’s the home of the Highlanders in Super Rugby and Otago in the National Provincial Championship. In addition to this, Forsyth Barr Stadium also hosted four games in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and the All Blacks played their inaugural test at the venue in 2012.
Despite the construction project facing considerable opposition at the time, Forsyth Barr Stadium is undoubtedly one of the finest rugby stadiums in New Zealand. It has a capacity of more than 30,000 and the Mitre 10 Mega Stand, which is also known as ‘the zoo’, is one of the loudest stands on the planet.
