About Sky Stadium
Sky Stadium, which is also commonly referred to as The Cake Tin or Wellington Regional Stadium, is one of the finest rugby stadiums in the world. Located in Wellington, NZ, it’s the home of the Wellington Lions in the Bunnings NPC and the Hurricanes in Super Rugby. It also regularly hosts All Blacks games. Sky Stadium was inducted into the RugbyPass Hall of Fame in 2021.
Sky Stadium was built in 1999 in order to replace Athletic Park and the Basin Reserve Ground, which had both been deemed inadequate for hosting international fixtures.
Although it’s a multi-purpose stadium, Sky Stadium is primarily used to host Wellington Lions, Hurricanes and All Blacks matches. However, it’s also the home of Wellington Phoenix FC and acts as a major home venue for the New Zealand national football team, the All Whites. On top of this, in summer, Sky Stadium also hosts international and domestic cricket matches.
Due to its status as a world-leading venue, Sky Stadium has also been used to host matches in major tournaments. It hosted eight matches at the 2011 edition of the Rugby World Cup, including the quarter-final between South Africa and Australia, and New Zealand’s 79-15 victory over Canada. It was also used as a host venue for the 2015 edition of the Cricket World Cup and hosted New Zealand’s thumping victory over the West Indies in the quarter-final.
Undoubtedly one of the greatest grounds in the world, we can’t wait to see what other major fixtures and tournaments Sky Stadium will host in the coming years.
